I will check into the cat. I suppose tapping it does not tell me anyting..I would probably of been able to hear pieces rattling or making noise anyway. A blockage makes more sence as the over heat condition could of roasted the insides

I did not get a chance to get under the truck and remove exhaust. I will do that as soon as I can.

I just soap tested and like I thought there was bubbling at the TPS sensor. I also suspected the "spring mechanism" or throttle return spring on the other side was leaky, sure enough when I really sprayed it good I got a few big bubbles.. Both sides are leaky.

I guess the throttle body is worn or something allowing that much air to escape under boost?

the seals are a problem although not your main one. suspecting cat now(go cat less)

the stock throttle body seals on the sides do eventually leak and need rebuilt or another TB
others and i have built them from $169 to about $235 successfully in another thread.

dont count that leak out- one day you will try to turn the boost up to 15-16 psi- and it will not rise no matter how much you adjust the wastegate
- leaks only get worse over time they never seal themselves back up

Just removed the exhaust flange from rear of cat. Contents still all held together. Not distorted or blocked in anyway. I stabbed in there with a extension to make sure it was all together and it was. I was really hoping this was the issue. Does not look like the problem. I wasn't supposed to check for a block at the front was I? That's a hard connection to separate.

Not sure where else to look.

Glad I asked. I thought it was a easy thing to drop the rear pipe and check it from the back... Thinking that's where the block would be.. Now it seems 200x harder to check it from the front. I remember it being so hard to seperate on my syclone with out damage. Not easy.

I was thinking of removing the 02 just to see how it looks.

I was thinking of removing the 02 just to see how it looks.
(get an external wastegate and port the turbo hole to match first so you dont over boost)
remove it -put a test pipe back in -never look back

Its just a stock style turbo. I didn't plan on going too crazy with mods.

Checked that other thread and see the guy had to flame cut the cat off to gain access at the least.. I'm wondering if he was able to hear any audible rattle ? That also looks like his blockage was all the way through, or at least viewed from the rear section where I viewed mine and was all intact.

Todays observations did not look so good.

Poped the intercooler off to get at the PCV valves. bought new ones yesterday at the dealership. Went to install the back one which was leaky looking. Poped it out and the bottom was covered with this sludge looking stuff. Than pulled the front one off and it looked like beads of water?? inside the PCV tube.

Started the truck up real quick and revved it up, puff of smoke. Pulled the breather cap off and it had same yellowish color sludge. It also was smoking out the breather cap.

Not sure if its worth going the distance to remove the cat, Seems like the head gaskets are blown or something.

Here is a better picture of the same stuff. I been trying to upload pictures using photobucket and there is problems on there end all day.

I am really at a toss up with the truck. Its a little bit involved breaking everything down. Of course I would plan on doing the work no one else is touching my stuff ever again. My main concerns are breaking anything else. (turbo studs/down pipe studs) With out having to drill like a maniac or tap stuff out to make things work again. I keep thinking about this and the only plan of attack is to remove the whole manifold with from down pipe and head. I just cant have a turbo manifold error.

Im not sure if I want to pull the test tools out and try and see whats going on. I might have a better shot ripping it all down and seeing it for my own eyes. I think it was a internal blow out. Not sure if it was the intake manifold gasket or the actual head gasket. Also not sure if I washed the bearings out and the motor is cooked. There is no external leak of coolant. and no indicators in the oil. It was a little thin but I could not tell. Removing the oil fill and the PCV was what drew my attention to something internal I am not seeing.

Pretty sure I have a set of head gaskets laying around, nothing special just some GM ones. Should work unless things change when I get down there. It would be nice. I have to check my stock. I am hoping this is a easy fix.

Haven't done anything except put a new radiator in. Went to install pcv valves and I caught the mess. Coolant in the oil might explain erratic oil pressure and fluctuation. Also might explain the turbo condition. If there is coolant in the turbo line or oil line there is a restriction. The water is forcing the oil out then turbo seals. I noticed some oil residue @ my turbo drain. I cleaned it and notice it's back leaky looking. I suppose the best thing to do is empty the whole oil pan into a container for examination.

What are we thinking now the rings could be snapped?

This is absolutely the " snowball effect" just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

I'm not sure pulling the whole motor is required to pull the heads, just all the stuff packed in on top. My only problem is the turbo, and down pipe I might fuss with because I have before.

Well I don't know how you're going to find your problem without pulling out some test tools. Seems pretty foolish to not do some preliminary testing. Sounds like you've been driving it too to try and get the turbo to spool so those bearings have been taking a beating. So go thru the hassle of tearing down to do a head gasket job and a month later you've got a nice little rod knock. Good luck.

Ok, Thanks for the optimism.

I just pulled out the " test tool " for added measure which would be a compression tester. I removed the fuses ECM A and B. Had truck FULL throttle when cranking.


Cylinder 1 150 PSI dropped quick
Cylinder 3 150 PSI dropped quick Held @ 30 PSI.
Cylinder 5 120 PSI dropped quick

Cylinder 2 90 PSI could not tell actual measure as it dropped quickly ( Hard to ID if there is coolant seepage at front of block)
Cylinder 4 Did not bother, things are not going well. ( looks like some coolant seepage at the head/block cant tell manifolds in the way Def. wet looking)
Cylinder 6 120 PSI also dropped quick.

Pretty much sums it up.

The 90 psi isn't encouraging. Have you drained the pan?

It's sounding more and more likely that you're going to need to pull the motor. Overheating and a cracked block may explain it but if there's coolant in there and the bearings are washed, same difference. You should try and get that last cylinder pressure though.

Whether it's just a head gasket or a crack, drain the pan and look for coolant. Then let us know. I suspect you'll be pulling the motor soon. Sorry man, just part of owning one of these toys. :tdown:

Drained the oil just now. Came out like water. Not seeing any visible coolant so far. Smells gassy. Very liquidy oil.

Transfered some of the oil into a storage container. Left about 1/2 in the drain pan to observe any seperation. There does look like some copper/brass material at the bottom of the drain pan. I'm going to wait a little and see if it separates.

You'll know if you have coolant in the oil right away, it will look milky.

Not sure if the photos help. Does not look milky like isaid but there are small droplets. Also note the bubbles. What I was seeing. I will have to cut the filter tomorrow or something and look for metallic wearings.
