Tuning input please

I have talked to a few shops about dyno tuning my new build. Maybe others in these areas will have something to contribute on what they are like to deal with and how happy they were with the tuning.

First we will start with MN. This works the best for me because it would be the closest.
DB performance is a shop I trust and Shane is the best tuner around. They have never tuned a Syclone but Im guessing Shane could catch on fast. I have been there before and I have always heard good things.

The second place in MN I called is named Hitech Motorsports. I called and the owner said they have tuned one typhoon that made 500 hp and a syclone that made 280hp. They said they use tunercat. I have never been to this shop and have never heard much about it. I read some really bad reviews on it tonight also. Any info from the MN crew on this one?

Next is Strait Line Performance in IL. That would be about a 350 mile drive for me but if the tune is done right I dont really care. I saw this video on Youtube and Im also wondering if anyone has info on this place. The shop in the background looks a little on the rough side. But thats not every thing. Any info on this would be great.

RPM has always sold me good products. The only problem is they are about 1700 miles away. They would tune the truck through emailing files back and fourth but they also wanted $1000 for that.

My first choice was Nolan. He charges $600 for a email tune. Hes really busy and wants to finish his own truck. I called and talked with him this week and it think in a nice way he told me hes not interested in tuning it because of this family life, and time restraints. Understandable.

I do have all the things needed to tune my own truck. I just dont want to risk blowing it up trying to learn. Thats not an option to me.

If anyone else on here has other places to check out or try let me know. If you are a tuner yourself we can talk price if you like. I know a few reputable tuners on here so it cant be just anyone.

Here is what we are looking at:

25g turboTE06H-24V mitsubishi (Compressor Wheel 55.5 / 77.9 mm (Inducer / Exducer ) turbine Wheel 55.8 / 66.3 mm ( Exducer / Inducer ) 12cm^

Re: Tuning input please

Tune it yourself, code59 works great in my truck, and you've already got all the right equip to DIY. I doubt you'll blow up your truck unless you start WOT right out the gate. Work on the idle, then cruising and real world driviing, then gradually work your way into boost. Only downside IMO is it takes time.

You can probably get RPM down to $500 or less if you let them know you have all your own equip, and just need one bin, instead of the multichip they offer. :dunno: But your still going to be the one driving it around and datalogging so...?? GL.

Re: Tuning input please

How far south do you want to drive?

Are you interested in someone helping you learn to tune, one on one help via phone, internet, etc?

I personally think any shop that said, yea we did it once just won't be up to speed on what is available, etc. Just my 2 cents. You will be paying for them to learn the syty specifics as much as the tune itself.

I totally agree with that.

I would be whiling to take a road trip with the truck to your location. Maybe we could work on a tune to get me to IL and once I get there we can do some fine tuning. I am also whiling to learn.

My time frame is April, early May. I need all the salt off the roads and Im still finishing a few things on my exhaust. I also want to make sure everything is ready mechanically before tuning.

Thanks for the offer. If Nolan is 100% out I might be working with you. I appreciate it.

Re: Tuning input please

You would be in damn good hands. Thing is, once you start getting the hang of what is what and why, you will gain the confidence to just finish it yourself. When I first started out, the truck kept stalling, had all kinds of weird things go on. Like you, it just didn't make sense to me. Once I started to see the outcome of certain actions (which really didn't take long) it made sense more and more every time. Tuning can be a royal PITA but all in all, I'd far rather deal with a little grief than to be at the mercy of someones dyno and lust for my money.:2cents: Plus, whenever you make a change to your truck, you will have the ability to tune it yourself and not make a million trips to a tuner.

Tune it yourself. Grab a starter BIN or someone's finished BIN and autotune it to get it running good. I bet by then you'll fell the confidence to finish it. I'm always in for tuning/59 advice, just PM me and i'll help you out.

One of my BINs might get you started, buy my cam is a little odd, so it wouldnt be 100% perfect.

Learn as much as you can. You will undoubtedly want to change something in your tune in the future and knowing what "dials" you will be turning in the computer is invaluable. I also suggest getting a good book on the subject. Even though you may know a lot about EFI systems, reading it from someone elses perspective especially an expert will really help solidify your knowledge. I know it helped me.

I also learned the value of a load bearing dyno versus non-load bearing. Now I would never take my truck to get tuned on a non-load bearing dyno because you get so much more information taking your time on a load bearing dyno.
