Transfer case question

I ran my Ty for several months without a front propshaft, and upon replacement with DynoTech rebuild, I'm getting a bad 'chudder' or clunking upon moderate acceleration. Seems more predominant after transition from reverse to drive. Sounds and feels like something slipping and re-engaging. Not able to duplicate with vehicle elevated- only happens under load, and may only occurr upon initial acceleration- doesn't always happen after 1 or 2 stop/ start cycles.
Is it possible I've done damage to the viscous clutch in the transfer case? I was careful not to romp on it too hard when the propshaft was out, but that's relative, I guess.
Driveshaft Specialists in Las Vegas has a re-manufactured unit with new clutch for $850., would a Bravada/Astro-Safari unit from salvage be a viable (and cheaper) alternative? Are flanges & shafts the same as ours?
Thanks for any suggestions

Re: Transfer case question

yup it's commonly known that driving without the propshaft is very bad for the xcase. it's usually much cheaper to get a used vc than buy a new one.

when you drive without the propshaft it cooks the vluid in the vc.

Re: Transfer case question

sounds like the chain is stretched and under load is jumping on the sprockets

the chain is around $400 by itself. might be better to go with the whole t-case assembly

Re: Transfer case question

Only problem with salvage yard tcases is there is no easy way to evaluate whether the VC is in any better shape than the one you've got. It's one of those "I hope this works" kind of deals. But for the savings (junkyard ones usually go for 1/3 of the cost of a rebuilt one or less) its probably worth trying.

Re: Transfer case question

my supplier in atlanta has new borg warner chains for ~$125. but if yours has slipped then it's probably damaged both the sprockets that it rides on.

my supplier in atlanta also sells used vc's that are garenteed good for about half the price of new.

Re: Transfer case question

Thanks for the *encouragement*, I knew from the getgo I shouldn't be driving without the p-shaft Not looking forward to futzing about in the t-case. Sure feels like chain slipping on sprockets and I'm sure the VC is fried also. Shee-ite...a costly mistake.

Re: Transfer case question

I'm in the same boat as you on this one, although I knew I was gonna replace the T-case by pulling the shaft. Nice reverberation of sound through the driveshaft, huh?
