Guys pay 15 grand for an engine and don't think twice about it. Then they budget $900 for the trans. Go figure.

a little more then that .....900..... i spent 8 on a converter. if i had 6 to spend i would think about it. but 22 yrs old, bills, school, car insurence... 6000 on a tranny isn;t the budget

(i only paid 6000 for a truck with lots of goodies and a bad motor)

How long have you had this converter for? If it is a lock up converter, you realize that the only way that you can flush it out is to CUT IT OPEN and clean it. A shop that specializes in this will have to be sought out. They cut the converter open along it's circumference clean it and then weld it back together. Incidentally, that is what is required if you want a converter "restalled" (stall increased or decresed by altering the pitch on the vanes). If you had it in the truck and blew a transmission up, all that shrapnel from that transmission is getting circulated into the transmission that you just installed if you are reusing that converter... For this reason, the transmission cooler lines as well as the cooler MUST be flushed as well:

Just curious, I'm not busting your chops at all, but why did you put an $800 torque converter on a junkyard/freebie trans? Seems a waste of a converter. Mike's right. The converter will have to be cut open and clenaed out.

what about a stock converter it still has to be cut to be cleaned?

Yes, any converter that is a lock up type will. Expect to pay roughly $100 plus shipping costs to have it done. George knows a shop that can do the work.

When working with transmissions, they are NOT forgiving if you don't do everything by the book. Recently, there have been quite a few folks crushing pumps during installs. After you do that once and have to deal with the consequences, you won't do it again...

every time someone mentions this , I want to kick myself .Live and learn I guess . It wont happen with my 4l80e though

The tranny in my truck right now was rebuilt by the shop that built the motor for the previous owner ----[HESCO in Alabama]---. i suppositly had a shift kit 4 pinion rear planetary, hard inputshaft, corvette valve body... blahblah! If they do trannys like they build motors i know why it went. the junkyard trannys were in my 2wd truck. The free tranny i had was an old SELECT unit and from my knowledge they were the first the start and try and make a 700 hold up. in the camaro it came out of it held up behind a TPI with a vortec on it for about 8k miles. I changed the output shaft to 4wd. my truck it lasted 3200 and the majority of it wasnt beating on it cause i had a list of problems.

It might be best if i called the converter company maybe they can clean it. that will be the first thing i do in the morning so i can add that to my bill. i think im going to put a new trans cooler so the one i had is old so instead of flushing if i have money left over im going to buy a new one.

i knwo everyone right now thinks im an idiot for not doing a 4l80 but i just cant afford it! with school starting the 5th of september a big investment like that will have to be during the winter. hopefully ill buy a hooptie by them so i can do some renovations to my truck... and maybe get a PRIME GEARS 6l80 converstion who knows.... its on the list

No one thinks your an idiot. Your learning the hard way unfortunately. Drive the truck easy until you get done with school. You'll be amazed how dependable they are when you DO NOT beat on them.

What years and applications were the 4L80E's in? I want to start looking for a core to get built...

2500 series and up trucks. Anything with a dually.

G20 series work vans.

That's the most basic way to find them.

You want anything from 1993 and up. Don't get a 91 or 92 model. The first two years were riddled with issues.

Do I need one of the TCI trans controllers for the shifts?
What other parts are needed?
Crossmember?
Who makes a front prop shaft?
Is the stock Transfer case ok to bolt up?
Rear drive shaft needs to be shortend right?
