trans rant!!! #5

Well i just got home its 3:30Am eastern time. After a great night of crusing around and seeing a good money race a friend of mine with a turbo honda civic....(stock motor w/ precious t70 has already gone 11.95@123mph) were gone at it and we came to a light so i put the truck in neutral and get the brakes ready. i tell him he's about to get raped from the hole, cause upstairs my truck is a pig he flys right by like im standing still. As i put the shifter into OD it bangs really hard. i wack the gas and the RPM's just flairs. i put it in reverse and it moves but no foward gears. So after driving about 20 minutes each way gettin my mothers car and a tow rope. my freshly waxed truck is down again! this is tranny number 5 for me....

just when im starting to have confidence in my truck and my work...... BAM! it lets me know that i own a typhoon . ill probably be selling some parts off this thing so keep an eye out in the market place, cause from what im guessing im looking at about 1600-2000 for a rebuild.

This is why I am scared to boost launch above 1-2 psi :(

Sorry to hear, how long on average has each tranny lasted?

Put your selector in D and see if it moves. You most likely flipped the sprag. That sprag is just not big enough for the torque these trucks can make.

Considering thatboth of your trucks had stock turbos, I would look for a new transmission rebuilder.

Welcome to disintegrated sprag clutch land. I'm Mayor Dig.

#6 was the magic number for me so far...

I got one or two of those... If I find another one, I suspect I'll be spending some money to go 80E

Your driving habits definitely warrant an 80e. I don't think a 700 is gonna take what your wanting from the truck. $2K for a 700 build you've paid. Trans #5= $10K in transmissions?

i put it in 1-2-d-od nothing! im beginning to believe i broke the foward planetary gear set.

well my Select 700 was free it came out of a parts car that was being junked it was in a accident and the tranny i just blew i fixed a month ago it broke the governer gear and it came with my truck, the pervious owner had it rebuilt. all my trannys before that were stock junk yard 700's 2wd with under 40,000 miles... i dont know what to do. i dont have 6000 to spend on a 80e so im kind of caught btwn a rock and a hard place. i love to drive my truck everyday and i cant afford the insurence on 2 cars.

my driving habits arent horrible i never boost launch the truck inless im racing and thats only been at the track lately i have 9 passes in total and its only been with this tranny. everything ive been doing has been from a roll or just at high speeds. like its already been said i have a stock turbo and im already having issues.

this will be the first time im actually paying for a tranny to be done... i got a quote from LEVEL 10 (17-1900) and a good friend of mine worked there so there giving me a deal.
what im fear is now , i pay all this money and i will be afraid to race it cause it might break.

You're mighty right... If you have any doubts listen to the folks on here whose ownership of these trucks is measured in YEARS not months. 700-R4's are "glass transmissions" even at stock power levels. Throwing more power into the equation only expedites the inevitable. There are really only three reasons to keep the 700-R4. You have too much money in your account. You enjoy bragging about breaking things. Or you want to keep the money you have to invest to keep it running to a minimum until you sell it to someone else...

I'm currently on my third transmission and when it was removed the last time, my truck was off the road for over two years because I didn't have the cash to get it done right. It's not cool owning something that you can't enjoy
icon_frown.gif
. However, all the money you will spend with "temporary transmissions" is money that could have went towards a SOLID transmission that you will never have to worry about again. A 4L80E will live under 1000 ft/lbs of torque all day which can't be said for a 700-R4. Start saving and pay for it now or pay for it several times later :2cents: ...

i understand your point... but its the money.that trans cost almost as much as my whole truck did. i would be carless for about 3 months trying to save money for that.
i guess im stuck doing a 700 and not racing anymore

I'm not surprised that you are blowing up junkyard 700's.

What Jimmy said.

The 4l80e is the ultimate fix, but a Sy/Ty specific trans with a decent build would be a lot better than what you've been using...

I stripped all the teeth out of my rear planetary carrier amongst other things when I lost my first 700-R4 back in '02:

As mentioned, using a non syty specific transmission ISN'T doing you any favors in the longevity department either. My bud who repeatedly got the wrong transmission from the "stealership" under warranty got away with it a few times. After he broke the output shaft on the third one, they stopped replacing it. One transmission lasted less than a week. Give me a "run of the mill" 700-R4 and I bet that could break it in a day at the track with my drag radials and 20 pounds of boost running the stock motor and turbo... It may sound like I harbor ill feelings towards the 700-R4 but nothing could be further from the truth:

You could buy a "built" 700-R4 but even it will break at some point. Everytime I make a pass at the track, I worry more about breaking my transmission than blowing my motor. If you can't go the 4L80E route, get a built 700-R4 and start saving for the 4L80E (if you plan on keeping the truck that is). If it was an option a few years ago, I wouldn't have another 700-R4 in my truck that's for sure.

im Thinking about trying to do it myself the guys at level 10 said they would assist me if i run into any difficults. but i definitly need to save for a 4l80 but for now im going to either do it myself or pay them to do it.

careful, i've heard horror stories about level 10, i've also heard good things though.. if you pay them to do it, and they give you a warentee make sure you get it in writing. :D

How about a fourth reason, I spent a bunch of money on a 700r4 rebuild kit/TC before the 4L80E conversion were available, so I have that laying and Typhoon core transmission laying around.

Ok, I have officially stopped racing until I can afford a 4l80e

6k... ow :(

Guys pay 15 grand for an engine and don't think twice about it. Then they budget $900 for the trans. Go figure.
