Timing Baseline ? - Brown Wire Reconnected

Hi all,

Quick question. With the brown wire unplugged I adjusted my distributor timing to be 0deg. Then with the brown wire plugged back in, is the reading supposed to be around 18 to 19 deg advanced? Just checking as I set the timing with a digital light that will let me read/calculate the advance if the notch on the balancer is far past the indicator pointer on the timing cover. So if 18 to 19 degrees sounds correct it would let me check my idle timing without having to unplug the brown wire perhaps?

P.S. What does the brown wire do anyways?

Thanks for any info, Pete

The brown wire disable the computer's timing advance. Yes you could set the timing if you knew how much the computer was advancing the timing, timing is based RPM and MAP. You could find the timing by looking at a scan tool, but it might be moving a little.

My truck has about 24-25 degrees of timing at idle.

Thanks Dave, so a little variation from 18deg to 24deg pending idle rpm with the wire reconnected should be basically ok...

You should be able to look at it with a data logger and see if what its doing is the same as what its calling for

Will try it with the Datamaster to see what it says too,

Had to go to Elwood, IL for some work but hope to try again and log it before Christmas and see what it reads.

If it's off compared to the logger, is that a sign of slippage on the harmonic balancer ?
