Temp. difference - working .vs. non-working IC

What water temp differences do you typically find with a functioning factory IC compared to a non functioning one? My pumps seems to be cavitating, truck runs warm and loves to ping. Would the higher water temp. difference be enough to make the truck detonate like crazy?

with a laser pointer thermometer, with dead pump the ic got to 195*F once, now after johnson pump and 3/4" heater hose through fender i tried 0-100 wot, on brakes hard, get out and check ic and it is 10* above ambent temp, i think it gets hot durring wot but cools off before i can get out to check it

If you think the pumps bad, check the fluid in the intercooler with the pump running, you should see movement/swirling. If you have a stock pump, swap it with something gooder. Check your thermostat for your engine coolant (not IC) if your engine seems to run hot. A stock IC setup in insufficient, and the coolant in the IC gets alot hotter than an upgraded setup.

Knocking or pinging is bad, your engine should try to alleviate this a little by retarding timing, but if its bad enough, it cant help, and you'll ruin the engine.

I know the detonation is not good for it As soon as I hear it ping I get out of the throttle. With the IC cap off and the pump running, I don't see any movement whatsoever in the IC. Pump seems to pump for a split second then stop. I'll check the timing tomorrow, drop it if necessary. Otherwise I'll have to order an aftermarket IC pump.
