well guys, i like my sonoma gt but i would like something a little faster. so i either want to get a syclone or a camaro ss either way money isnt really an issue because these cars are both pretty close in value and im going to get something with less miles and i would like to know some of your input. Pro's -Con's

also if you guys dont mind i would like to know what you pay insurance a year on your Sy's and ls1 if you have one. I would just like to know so im not super suprised when i get my first bill im also getting full coverage. answer if you want to

Re: Syclone or Camaro SS

i used to drive an ls1 camaro....21 years old paying about 250-300 a month

i dont have a sy yet but based on other people on the boards...looks like the camaro would be more reliable

Syty Killer :(
Re: Syclone or Camaro SS

Ls1's are cheaper(maybe not a nice SS), more reliable, and faster. But they are more expensive for insurance(for me anyways), will lose value instead of it going up like a syty, and arent as rare.
Its a toss up, all depends on if you are ok with being under a hood all the time and spending twice as much on gas. Or if you want to be able to rely on something and go fast for much cheaper.
My vote goes for a 69 camaro with a new LS7. Stand out, go fast, reliable if done right.

These trucks are cursed
Re: Syclone or Camaro SS

the syclone is cool cause its a sleeper, its rare, and its AWD. but if youre not mechanically inclined and dont know how to do basic repairs... then get prepared to be learning a lot as these trucks tend to be maintenance whores, especially when theyre a daily driver.

the camaro is definitely faster on the top end, and probably more reliable. But, you might pay a lil more in insurance especially being 17.

im 27 and have 5 tickets on my record and i pay $298 a month for full coverage w/ $13k pay off on my syclone, full coverage with $17k pay off on my typhoon, and full coverage with a $12k pay off on my mazda protege5.

when i was 19 i think i had about 8 tickets, 2 suspensions, and SR-22 on my record, and the cheapest full coverage i could get on a 94 S-10 blazer was $327 a month. My theme song was "i fought the law, and the law won" for a long time.

Re: Syclone or Camaro SS

I would go with the Camaro. Sure the insurance will be a little more, but you can carry 3 friends and have fun. Personally, being 17 myself, I woundn't take the chance of using a Sy as a DD, considering parts are expensive. These trucks are almost irreplaceable in the event of a major accident, whereas there were millons of F-body cars made. While this may sound a little far-flung, have you ever thought about putting a V8 into a Bravada? Lower ins, AWD, and seating for 4. Not quite an LS Camaro or a SyTy, but a mix of both. Just something to ponder:2cents:

Re: Syclone or Camaro SS

my sy has some issues but nothing that prevents me from driving it. like any 15 year old car, there will be some things wrong even with one in great condition. i drive mine daily and i get into boost everytime i drive it. I have taken it to the track a few times with no new concerns afterwards. i have the sy and n 05 sentra ser spec v, my premiums are about 630 every six months and i have low deductables

Re: Syclone or Camaro SS

well the gas really isnt my concern i mean i know both will kill me on gas if i drive fast but thats what there made for for doing repairs on cars and trucks i can do just about anything as my job is working on cars so repairing wouldnt be a problem, having more people in my car isnt really a concern and wont affect my decision much, i did plan on getting a SS and keeping my SGT but now i would like a sycolne and down the road an SS but i just couldnt decide which one to get first there both nice vehicles and both are fast thats what makes my decision hard. so im still undecided. also the camaro would be much worse winter car i think. Hmmmmmmmm

What about a Typhoon? Fits four - still AWD, and they seem to be a little less expensive than the syclones right now. I Love mine, and the my wife's ty is her favorite out of all our cars as well. Also, when it's cold in the windy city the ladies can fit in back with the seat down...

Re: Syclone or Camaro SS

I wouldn't go the SS route.. It's just badges, rims and hood over the base model camaro and isn't worth the extra money in my opinion but again that's just my opinion. I would however go with the ls1 over the sy at your age right now you want to be able to turn the key and go and lets face it rwd is much more fun especially at your age then awd. Aside from that the ls1 motor is cheaper and easier to mod and maintenance factor isn't a problem as there are tons more people/shops capable of working on the ls1 motor unlike our motors.

Camaro SS if you wanna go fast and not have to reinvent the wheel.

Got ran down on the top end by an SS running a 125 shot. Sucked to be me but the guy could shift, ran me down by 2/3 track, and beat me by half a car length at the traps. I slaughtered him on the launch though ;) .

Having both I can say the following. The LS1 in my 98 Trans Am is alot of fun, IE never have to work on it, Gets great gas mpg (24 city and 32.5 hwy), the ability to make 90* turns in a intersection. But it not at all like the Syclone, my Syclone gets 17 mpg city and 22.5-25 mpg hwy depending on if I am playing around or not. But the pure joy I have from playing with the Syclone can never be replace and maybe thats why these trucks are addicting.

Re: Syclone or Camaro SS

the reliability thing is starting to get to me how much do you guys really repair these Sy's on an average(i know its hard to think of an average) the awd-rwd doesnt matter to me we all know awd can be very fun. to answer Sleepy i just like the syclone better also i feel like suv's are gonna tip when i take a turn hard maybe its just me.

Keep the reply's coming

Re: Syclone or Camaro SS

I love my sy , i beat the hell, well not really, out of it, and all it says is "I'M thirsty" love the boost launch in the rain and actually going somewhere too. I am pretty new to this but I did more repair work to my acura after beating it up than i do with the sy. i do miss the better mpg though

Re: Syclone or Camaro SS

Sleepy, how big are the women you make reference to that you have to fold the seat down in a Ty to accomodate them?? To each their own, I suppose.

My nickle.....

Both vehicles arent fast. SyTys are quick, not fast. Thats why we get burned on the top end.

AWD is a pro. Control in the winter and makes for a good grab off the line (is one of our trademark attributes)

I'm a bit biased. Camaros are old school as Mustangs are. Everyone's buddy has one and has already done everything that can be done to them. Thats good if you just want to follow suite but not many will be impressed. They've already seen it done. These trucks dont even have to roll to get respect and attention from people who actually know what they are. We've been to several "car shows" and lined up next to Vettes and other impressive vehicles but the crowd still congregates around my wife's Ty, pictures and such. Hmmm.

I suppose that you need to work the equation backwards and ask yourself what you're looking to accomplish. Each have pros and cons. Weigh em out.

As for ME. I'd choose a SyTy any day. Mine are toys. IMO, theres nothing more satisfying than rolling up unsuspectingly on some jackass in a late model vehicle with an ego that needs help or a punk in a matchbox with all the Autozone add-ons that his parents could afford (not to mention, Outlaw Octane Boost) with stickers on the glass to prove it and handing them thier ass in the first two seconds in a 15 year old mid sized SUV.

I dont rely on mine. Thats not why I have them. Additionally, cost and time arent a factor. Again, what do you want in the end and can you afford to do it...is what you need to ask yourself.

Re: Syclone or Camaro SS

I would go with a syclone. I was in the same boat about 4-5 months ago when I had to buy a vehicle and was considering either a camaro or a typhoon. Before I bought the TY I read a lot on here that SYTY "break down" a lot and you have to pour money into them. I bought mine with 128,000 miles and now I've got 133,000 miles on it and nothing has really gone wrong. I've been finding stuff I "could" fix, but it's not really needed. I drive it daily as it's my only car and yes, they do take up all your money.....because you get so addicted to where you just want to buy a lot of aftermarket stuff for it :D I haven't boughten anything maintenance wise besides a tune up kit so far.... :2cents:

I like how he thinks......
But anyway i have had thoughts about getting rid of my truck for an LS1 car mainly cause i havnt driven mine since i bought it 7 months ago it been in pieces. But when i look outside and see it waiting for me to get my act together im glad i have it. When i go to the local areas where thy race NO 1 has one and very few know what it is. I have given up on gas mileage in place for FUN. As for the advantage of the LS1 my tyclone had no problem with topend... plenty of 140 mhp pulls on a high mileage motor. its all about how you take care of it and learn how to drive normally.
Every green light doesnt mean its time for a BOOST LAUNCH!
As for insurence for liability i pay 2700 a year 21yrs old with a bad license!
go with what will make you happier in the loong run.

Re: Syclone or Camaro SS

Well, I too am in the same boat as you. I want something faster, my GT tends to bore the crap out of me. My solution:engine swap. I have an LS1 sitting in my garage right now. When summer rolls around and school gets out, I'm throwin the LS1 in my truck. An engine swap may not be what your lookin for, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

Re: Syclone or Camaro SS

I own both, so here is my viewpoint.

Reliability, Gas Mileage, Availibility of mods & dollar per HP = LS1.

Rareity, knowing that you have something that no one else has & sleeper effect for people that don't know what they just lined up next to = SY.
