Secondary IC rad

Since I can't afford a A2A setup I'm thinking I might add a secondary A2W rad to my system. By using, for example, a trans cooler mounted in front of the rad I figure I can bring the IC water temp down considerably. Only problem so far seems to be pipe size of some of these coolers is small.

What have you used if you've done this?

TIA

Re: Secondary IC rad

I've been thinking about doing the same thing Don.... I had this thought.... why not use a heater core?? They've got 3/4" inlet/outlet on some and they are stupid cheap on Ebay. Plus, they're designed to extract the maximum amount of heat.
I've seen a couple on Ebay that look like the inlet/outlet is perfect.... check it out and you may find one that looks good.

This one might work.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1996...rQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_500wt_1225

or this one... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-...rQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_500wt_1225

Looks like the ones made for older vehics have same-sized inlets and outlets. I think we'd just have to fab a couple of brackets. I was going to vacuum form a piece of ABS to use as a mount/shroud.

Re: Secondary IC rad

Some people have used a heater core (or 2) that has helped drop temps quite a bit. If you go to your local parts store- look for one from a ford truck ( I believe). If you have upgraded to 3/4" hose, it should just slip in line.

Edit- wyo beat me to it!

Re: Secondary IC rad

Might be extreme, but I've heard of people using small honda radiators as well. There's also another thread with a guy from sweden selling an upgraded core for 275 bucks plus shipping.

Tranny coolers are better for oil cooling than water cooling.
Heater cores will work best but are difficult to mount due to their shape.

Hey Don, do some searching on ebay and you'll find some really good deals on a2a IC's. You'll have to do more searching to find tubing at good prices, but they are out there. ;)

Nope, not from Sweden , but its close.
From The Netherlands.
It replaces the stock for a bar/plate one who is much bigger than stock and then you don't have to use a secondary.

Hey Don, IMO, since you're spraying alky I wouldn't complicate the set up any more. Intake temps will be plenty cold:D.

Re: Secondary IC rad

I like the heater core idea. Will keep that in mind. Although I do spray meth it doesn't come on until I'm already in boost so I was just thinking the cooler the better.

Thanks all!

Re: Secondary IC rad

Transcoolers are a bad idea.

ATV and motorcycle radiators are a good choice.

This is an old skool mod called the "auxillary intercooler" thats been around for ages.

Get a hayden trans cooler and do just like you said...mount to the front of the radiator behind the grille. You will have to trim out some of the center cross radiator support, but its perfect for lowering temps.

The aux cooler that ATR sold was a Hayden cooler like from the link on the previous post.

I have that plus I run it through my heater core & run the AC & select hot so the heater core gets nice cold AC air blowing through the heater core, but some say it does not do any good, but my truck did not have high boost, loose converter, or alky to run low 12's.

Re: Secondary IC rad

Something to add... on Ian's truck (SyTyArchives) back when we did his aux IC years ago, we drilled out one side of the hayden cooler and installed a petcock to help bleed the system of air. Worked out perfect.

Re: Secondary IC rad

hmmmm i have been running my intercooler through my heater core for years, but the only way it will help you is to put it on heater and high fan. it has worked great for me.

Re: Secondary IC rad

I suppose I could get rid of the AC but never the heater. Good idea though.

Re: Secondary IC rad

kinda crazy, after a boost launch, on a warm day, you can feel the heat get alot hotter, then after 30-60 sec it gets back to cool.

works like stink, but most people say " it wont help you" lol... datamaster doesnt lie.

Re: Secondary IC rad

^^X2^^

I worked on a Ty that had this cooler. I was convinced that it could never be bled beyond the lowest 'pass', and was therefor almost completely ineffective. The bleeder is imperative, IMO.

X3 If there is any kind of high point in the system you're screwed without some sort of way to get the air out.
