I remember this being discussed last year or the year before... It envolves a lot more than reversing the water pump... head gasket design changes ect.... It's like increasing the flow of water through an engine.... if you have too much flow, the water does not have enough time to absorb the heat or stay in the radiator long enogh to get rid of it.... removing the thermostat can cause this problem (without putting a restriction in its place). An overheating problem can be caused by a lot of different reasons...

The early Pontiac V8’s had reverse flow. From their introduction in ’55 through about ‘63 (I think). The water came off the water pump, was piped to the cyl heads. Water then flowed through one side of the heads, down through the block then back up through the heads and out through a conventional t-stat housing (The heads were partitioned.)

Just FYI, a few heavy duty engines put the thermostat on the inlet side. These engines have flow-through thermostats that allow virtually full water pump capacity even when the thermostat is closed but routing the water back to the inlet side of the pump. As the engine warms up the thermostat gradually allows more water to flow through the radiator. Whether on the -hot- side or the -cold- side the idea is to keep the water circulating and prevent hot spots. In our engines there is very little flow when the thermostat is closed. (Heater flow only.)
