Re: Requirements

Notebook or Netbook....doesn't matter. As long as you have a serial or USB port, you can run an emulator. Hardware-wise, you'll need:

An emulator (Ostrich, AutoProm, etc...)
An adapter (Moates G3, modified stock chip, etc....)
A Laptop (mentioned above)
A USB cable (provided with emulator)
Software (TunerPro, etc....)
ALDL Cable (for monitoring)

*USB to Serial adapter (only needed if your laptop does not have a USB port)

Forgot the ALDL cable, Hood-man.

I'll add to this by saying if you have a laptop/netbook built in the last 2 years that doesn't have a dedicated serial port, get either the Moates USB ALDL cable (preferred) or the aldlcables.com USB cable.

You'll fight lots of problems with serial ALDL cables and USB-> serial converters.

Re: Requirements

alright, seems simple enough (sarcasm)

so, i guess my next question is using the stock chip for all of this, does that work well, any disadvantages to using it, is what i guess im really wondering.

as for the emulator, i seem to read alot of people who say they are using ostrich, was just curious if theirs really any difference between the company's on performance or if the interface was notably better one ect...

the reason i asked about if a notebook would work is because it has very limited ram and cpu power, was just seeing if there was a minimum system req to actually run the software.

lookin forward to digging into the project, it sounds like its gonna be a ton of fun/disaster

Re: Requirements

List the specs of the laptop and we'll see if you can properly run the software. Pushing the hardware is no problem with any system this side of the ENIAC, but the software could be. If you're running a modern OS (98SE, XP, etc...) you should have no problem with TunerPro. Here's the requirements for it:

Minimum:
Intel Pentium® 100 mhz or equivelant for TunerPro Free
Intel Pentium 200 mhz or equivelant for TunerPro RT
16 MB RAM
Microsoft Windows® 98 (Win95 will not run TunerPro)
800 x 600 minimum supported resolution

Recommended:
Pentium 233 mhz or better
32 MB RAM or better
Win98 SE or better
1024 x 768 or better resolution capability
* for the ALDL mon/log feature in RT, a 300 mhz or better is recommended

As far as the hardware, you mention other emulator companies. Which ones are you comparing? Moates Ostrich/AutoProm and Transtronics ROMulator? Both work great, but the Ostrich has become the go to for most of us. Mostly due to the size of the Ostrich, it's ease of use, and the close relationship of Craig and Mark (for future changes/support).

The stock chip will be required in a piggyback manner if you use a Moates G3 adapter (or similar). If using a modified stock chip, then you'll plug the emulation header directly into the newly soldered-in socket.

Does that answer your questions? I'm not sure what you meant by usage of the stock chip, but it's function is much reduced when emulating. Ask away if you need more clarity.

Re: Requirements

I've run tunerpro/ostrich on an old Pentium I with 64M ram and Windows 98.
Soo, not so much for requirements.

The reason people use the ostrich/Moates stuff is that it just works. Lotta guys try to go with something different, and end up spending more money to have stuff that doesn't work.

is that what im looking for with an emulator?

the software looks free..(tunerpro)

as for the cables, (This Kit includes a Ribbon Cable, A USB cable, the OSTRICH Unit, and a Dip Socket.) not sure what else i need, other than some kind of cable that leads from my aldl conenctor to a usb port.

sorry im a slow learner, just wanna make sure im doing it right
