rear suspension

Okay so im on the search on how to finally resolve the hard banging i get from the rear end of my truck when i hit a bump. I have installed the belltechs rear springs that have the two inch drop, sway bar was always on the truck since i got it and the monomax shocks that i got from a member. Im thinking it has to do with the shocks but before i start spending money i need to make sure. I dont see it being possible that maybe its just not enough room and it bottoms out.....but it bangs hard. What do you guys think??

Re: rear suspension

avoid bumps. remove as much weight from the rear as possible. stop driving. These are the 3 top ways to cut down or eliminate the banging.

You could go to a taller poly bump stop that is in contact at all times...but pretty much no matter what you're going to get some banging when you hit a bump. I personally just laugh it off every time it happens - I can hit a manhole cover in mine (3" blocks, adjustable qa1 rear shocks set to almost fully firm) and it'll bottom out. I have about 3/8" of travel before the bump stops hit.

What springs do you have in the rear, stock? I wouldn't mind installing the bump stops but i don't recall if i have them now with the belltechs. Need to look under the truck when i get home unless someone has an idea.

Re: rear suspension

"Bangs", eh? Renz hit the major areas that can be changed: Increase spring rate, or increase travel. Decrease weight, decrease driving speeds. Shocks control rebound, not jounce. Banging is jounce-related, so shocks have little influence on banging.

The idea of substituting a bump-stop that is always in contact with the frame is novel. Haven't ever heard the suggestion to replace spring-rate with polyurethane before.

Thanks Dave for explaining. Its just amazing that i dropped it two inches with the belltech springs and nothing more than that and it bangs like I have no travel room at all. Maybe i will ask for some rides in other trucks when we get together for a meet. Thanks

Re: rear suspension

Could be axle contacting the frame, I usually notch the bump stop "perch" (for lack of a better word) to allow for the this. If all you have is drop springs and you don't have any lowering blocks I don't see this being the case, but in all the the other trucks I've worked on if it's lowered and there's "hard banging" in the rear then this was the case.

Disclaimer, Renz get your mind out of the gutter, these comments are in no way a solicitation for sex.

Re: rear suspension

Every SyTy I have owned that has been lowered 2" or more in the rear would bottom out. The axle tube just runs out of room to travel, simple as that. So either the axle has to have more travel room which means raising the truck, or the bumpstop that the axle is hitting has to be raised. I have C-notched the frame of a blazer to accomplish this but I'm sure you wouldn't want to do that with your Typhoon. I think Eric M (smoosh) used air shocks in the rear and pumped them up when traveling to get a stronger suspension (sorry DaveP, I'm sure my terminology isn't correct:)) to help with bottoming out. Had a stiffer ride but didn't bottom out all the time. He could then let some air out and get a good stance when at shows etc.

Am I in the lead for the use of "bang" in this thread? :D

you haven't heard that suggestion before because it's a Renz original

I have considered trying this to see if it would work - I suspect it would, for a while anyway...until the poly wore out or decapitated itself. I'm sure this isn't ideal, and would also promote a more bouncy ride. I guess it comes down to what you want more: a rear end that bounces/dances on you....or a rear end that bangs you real hard when you least expect it.

I love this Freudianesque conversation.

Again, I have no proof, just personal theory, that this would work. But it would be a cheap and quick thing to attempt, and even better not require any dismantling of the truck to try it out.

Re: rear suspension

Vinny I have beltech leafs w/1" block, beltech sway bar, bilstein sport shocks, and energy suspension bump stops. My truck doesn't bang at all. When I had 3 inch blocks on stock leafs with monomax shocks it jarred my teeth when the axel tube hit the frame.

Re: rear suspension

If you want to see what is happening, have a couple of people or one pretty fat guy sit in or on the rear of your truck. Once they are comfortable, throw a jack under the front on one side. Start lifting. By lifting from the front, you should see max travel on the rear opposite of where you are. You may not need the weight in the back, but it could be helpful if the rear also starts to lift. Try to do this on level ground.

Matt - can you give me the part numbers for the bilstein sport shocks and the energy suspension bump stops! Thanks
