Re: Rear differential axle freeplay
not exactly , correct a new c-clip would not fix this but the free play is between the end of the axle and the center pin not between the ring and the pinion.
With all due respect I beg to disagree. A c-clip does nothing but retain the axle in the differential side gears.
"C-Clip - “C” clips are commonly used on semi-floating axles to retain the axle shaft. On the spline of the axle shaft there is a receiver groove cut into the end for the C clip to grab the axle. There is a pocket machined into the side gear of the carrier that the OD of the C clip fits into. With the cross shaft removed, the axle is inserted into the side gear. At this point the C clip is placed onto the shaft and the shaft is pulled out until the clip is seated in the pocket. Now the cross shaft is reinserted and the axle can no longer move in or out except for its appropriate end play." End play here will be very little and not be part of any backlash at the ring & pinion.
Look about 2/3 down here for a picture:

So unless there is something seriously wrong backlash as felt at the pinion flange or yoke will be between the ring an pinion.
