rather than waking up at 430am to go to the drags in fontana, my friends talked me into going to "grudge night" in palmdale. 2 traffic accidents and an hour and a half later we finally get there.

since this was my first time at palmdale i had no idea how it was set up, we just kinda got there and i was racing within 5 minutes. first race is a new Z28, i pull up and stage, and im preparing for the textbook launch, but the lights arent going. so i let my foot off the gas, and naturally once i do that then the lights start, by the time i had barely any boost built up the lights were already green. i ended up with a shitty 1.46 reaction time, but still pulled a 1.89 60ft. the beginning of the race was a joke, the Z28 was in my mirror, but came on real strong at the end. i still pulled out the win, but not by much. my first 1/4mi time was 14.05 at 93.54mph. IMO thats just absolutely shitty.

the next race im thinkin "ok gotta at least pull 13's" i getting ready to stage when i look over to see what im racing i see a new camaro SS with a license plate that says "10SECSS". right off i know this isnt going to be pretty. paying too much attention to the camaro i didnt realize i drove right through the water in the burn out box. i pull up to the line, stage, and launch! before i know it my tires are just spinning and the camaro seems like its already half way down the track, by the time my tires even hook up. needless to say, it was a slaughter! although i dont really consider that to be a major defeat, when the guy finishes with a 12.06, and my slow ass pulls a 14.14

im in need of some major tuning here, and im sure using regular 91oct is part of the problem.

since we hit traffic going there, i was only able to get 2 runs before they closed the track, and i hate leaving the track after getting beat.

so im pretty pissed that i drove 90+miles, sat in traffic, paid $15, and only got to do 2 runs. anyway were heading back home, im cruisin around 85, when i fly by a saleen. next thing i know this guy is so far up my ass, that i can read his license plate in my rear view mirror! so i wait for a straight part on the freeway, and jump on the gas. im hauling ass doin about 115. Adios motherfucker! right? WRONG! that guy reeled me in, and flew by me like i was sittin still, i kept my foot on the gas, and it didnt even matter, he pulled so far ahead, that i just quit. goddamn it! i wish these eff'n trucks had more power in the top end.

i pretty much drove home with my tail between my legs, after pulling 14's, and getting beat by a mustang. tonight has truly sucked! and ive disgraced the sy/ty community!

They have top end when they are tuned right and not pulling out a pile of timing up top. 14's is bad for a Sy no two ways about it. Actually its a disgrace to be blunt. But that is some useless fuel you are running. I ran 91 octane my first time to the street legal drags with the Ty and it ran around 14.2 all night. I came back the next day to bracket race and it ran 13.2. No change but a different chip and C-16 race fuel.

Tell us your mods and I'm sure we can point you in the right direction to lopping a full second off that ET without spending too much money. Hang in there it'll be worth it.

Must have been a bad night. Your truck felt better than that.

Next time, get yourself a 5 gallon can and go to the Texaco station on the corner of Desoto and Vanowen. They have 101 octane unleaded. (About 3.99 / gal.) Judge the amount of gas in your tank so you are almost empty when you get to the drags. (Or you can pump it out at the fuel rail.)

You will notice the difference.

dont forget palmdale is a slow track.. depending on the weather, it can be .5 slow. So with your first pass, you are definately in the 13s.

Next time dont be so worried about who you are racing. You are at the track and you are racing yourself. There is no money on the line (if there was, why wasn't I invited?) WHo cares what your reaction time is? doesnt make you any slower. Next time be patient, prepare ahead of time, install those parts you bought from me, and it will go ALOT better.

If you want to beat the saleen on the freeway, buy the turbo kit or let me race him

thanks for all the encouraging words guys. we made an attempt to get some 101oct, at the only station we knew of, but they were out of it. so we figured we'd just get some when we got there, only they had the pumps closed, so i didnt really have an option.

george thanks for the texaco info, now i know another place to look for the higher octane gas.

so mike, will AR Auto instal all the shit i got from you and tune my truck afterwards? hahaha not that i cant do it myself, its just the lack of tools, time and knowledge, is beyond frustrating now to the point were i dont even want to mess with doing it anymore.

Dean, what mods do i have? ummm installed? hahaha right now the only mods i have installed are a walbro, a jabsco, atr exhaust, and a 7" SPAL fan on the back of my CCHE (thanks george) what do i have sitting in my closet? a billet AFPR, 3bar, ultimate, tranny cooler, blow off valve, 160* thermo, TC lock up switch, and a 3gauge pillar, with gauges.

i know im somewhat on the right track for having a strong truck, and i know tuning has a lot to do with it. but i know ill never get my truck running good when i dont have a datamaster yet, or any knowledge of how to tune it right. i personally would rather pay someone that knows what theyre doing to install my stuff and tune it, and let me watch over their shoulder so i can learn what to do. i guess coming from such a shitty car background is to blame haha especially when i drive a nicer car than both my parents, and they always tell me, "a car is just meant to get you from point A to point B", "i dont know why youre wasting all this money on a 10 year old truck"... hahaha real encouragement there! thanks mom! ok ok sarcasm done.

aside from the stuff i already have, is there any other cheap mods i can get to make me a lil bit faster? i was told a new impellar might be helpful.

Yup. You've started with what many of us call the reliability mods, and you realize the importance of Datamaster. It sounds like you have a few friends down there looking out for you too.

Cheap mods? Well read the FAQ's and what not. Since you got the Walbro and the AFPR, I'd round out fuel delivery with a new fuel filter for sure. Conrad cap & rotor, good plug wires and properly gapped plugs also. Just make sure everything is in good running order basically and the Datamaster, AFPR, and Ultimate chip will look after the rest for you. You'll be running a full second quicker in no time. Good luck.
