New times / timeslip

I went to Silver Dollar dragway today. I ran a pretty good time but it seemed like theirs alot left in it. Truck was running 25psi 26 degrees of timing. All stock longblock. Im running a lockup 9.5 2800 convertor , 60lb injectors, PTB 61mm / .85 ex turbo / 3 inch downpipe back/ FMIC/ C16 tune by RPM. AC DELETE / RPM FANS. Conv locked with KB switch. I cant get it to 60ft worth crap! 1.8s Once out of the HOLE,your pinned to the seat the whole track. ALSO, Intake was heat soaked on this run. Truck was also running about 190 degress. Its time for a aftermarket radiator. Is their anything I can do to get this thing to spool up off the line. SMALLER EX HOUSING? Aprox 5/6 LBs is my max!!! 2600/2700 on the brakes. Temps outside were in the low 80s which didnt help any.. I was hoping for some lower 11s out of it! Any suggestions would be much appreciated..

Nice times!

Looks to me you need a higher stall converter for high boost launches. 3200-3400 rpm or so.115 mph should be a 11.4x or so et. Your absolutetly losing time on the 60' should be 1.5-low 1.6:2cents:.

x2 more stall convertor and launch it around 10 or 12 lbs.

Re: New times / timeslip

I can get a free stall adjusment from the guys I got the convertor from. Any other suggestions? Think this alone would get me 10/12lbs on the brakes or better to get my 60s down.

Look at your AFRs at spoolup and see if you can run it a bit leaner during spoolup...it should help if you're running a bit rich now.

Re: New times / timeslip

Start with the higher stall. Are your tires spinning on the launch?

Also the pic in your avatar looks like you could benefit from front end limiters.:2cents:

What Rob is saying is at the lower boost level 0-8psi or so, you will want to lean it out some low 13's would be ok, it will help the turbo spool quickly and help your 60ft times out.

My bone stock truck would go 1.8 60ft and now with a 60-1 turbo and 3k stall it goes low. 1.6's. You definitely have a stall converter issue, who's converter is it? I can hold 12psi with my RPM 9/11 converter.

Re: New times / timeslip

Mine bone stock would go low 1.7s The brand of conv is by a company called revmax 2800 with balloning plates. Pretty good guys from what I got out of them.. I can foot brake it to 2700/2800. Mike suggested it needed only a 2800. I wander if I should have RPM reprogram thier multichip to lean the lower tables on the program. This would be the easiest thing to do..

Re: New times / timeslip

Personally,
I would run a smaller housing. It will drive better day to day, don't need a higher stall & get worse mileage,if that's any concern, C16 is pricey.
I will say, ( running a smaller A/R housing) it should drop your ET from what you have now,but might lose a bit of top end ,but not by much.
Also, when loosening up your stall, you might loose top end MPH anyways, which will possibly end up w/the same MPH when switching to the smaller housing, but with the smaller A/R you will feel the low end torque push your truck sooner in the lower RPMs,,,& w/a stock cam,,,, you need to keep the stall as low as possible to use that low RPM torque band. My Stock long block makes 550 ft lbs peak torque being 2700 - 3000 RPM range.

I think you will like the feel of your turbo spooling up quicker also w/a smaller A/R .

I think I have read somewhere the the turbo you have,,,the turbine housings are a bit bigger A/R than of other brands?
Like yours is a .85 on others it is more like a .88 or so?

But, like I said, you will like the turbo spool up faster &, w/out haveing to pull the trans ,restall the converter,a smaller EX housing would be a cheaper, less labor intensive choice.

You can also have your turbine wheel clipped to bring back the top end pull allowing the exhaust to breath better & run the smaller housing.

What size smaller EX housing do they offer? .63 , .68 or so,,,I would go that route.:2cents:

Re: New times / timeslip

Would I benefit from a ball bearing upgrade on the turbo? Im gonna call precision tommorow to see how much all of this is going to cost me!! Do you think it would be possible to push this combo to a 11.10 / 20s. Should I have RPM retune my multichip to lean it more out of the hole?

Re: New times / timeslip

That 61mm turbo with a .85 backhousing seems way to big for a turbo that size. I would look into changin that and mayb to a ball bearing to make it spool faster but thats goin to cost you some dough.

Re: New times / timeslip

I have heard that having switch to a BB turbo, some have been able to boost up to 500 RPM sooner than w/a plain journal bearing.

I would ask what Precision has to say first about your plans or ideas.

Goodluck!

Re: New times / timeslip

I would suggest before you go spends hundreds of dollars you learn how to do your own tuning. Just my own suggestion not based on anything just a guess.

The best tuner is the one at the track with you, even the best tuners in the world are useless if they don't come to track with you. Reason #234562 to learn to tune yourself.

Or you can spends hundreds of dollars on other stuff and hope it works out.

Re: New times / timeslip

You are running a stock longblock.
Running a 11.7 @ 115 MPH is no slouch. You can get the best tuner & I kinda doubt a better tune will bring you down to a 11.1 Just my thought anyways.

Switching to a smaller A/R on the turbine housing, clipping the turbine wheel & a better suited converter will make it easier to get closer to a 11.1

Don't think your tune can be that far off running 115 MPH,but probably could use a little tweaking for the launch RPM area would help as Wyosyclone suggested.:2cents:

Re: New times / timeslip

Many SyTy have use the PTE 0.85 exhaust housing. Your converter sounds a little too tight. If your only getting 2600/2700 on boost launch you may only have 2400 rpm stall converter or its could be your tune.

I wouldn't goto a smaller exhaust housing/clipped wheel. PTE doesn't offer smaller housing for SyTY and if he changes the housing and uses an adapter he is going to change/modify the down pipe to make it fit. A smaller housing and clipped wheel will most likely hurt some your top end.

11.1 is definitely ambitious for a PTE 61 on stock block, but Phil Long was able to squeak out a 11.1 @118 out a PTE52. Your really not all that far off from what he did for mph. I am not sure if you have a pte6131 or 6152 ( or newer version 6157 or 6162 respectively), but a 6152 is a pte52 with a 2 mm larger compressor wheel. So it's doable. Turbo Buick are able to push those turbo's to low 11's/High 10's on stock shortblocks.

I would work on your tune first. it the easiest to fix and it may solve all your problems. If that doesn't work try restalling your torque converter.

Re: New times / timeslip

Ive decided to go with a 3500 Vigilante 5 disc lockup convertor. Prescision says this will definetely fix my spool up problem. They said their stator assembly is more suited for building boost than the convertor I had.. also I drove my truck yesterday and the transmsission was toasted!! :rotf: Rebuild time!! I guess when your locking the convertor the entire run down the track, stall slippage doesnt matter !!! so the 3500 stall combined with my stock cam will not be a issue!! Im in Hope of matching Longs times!!! Also gonna install a methanol kit to get the heat down in the intake and possibly a c02 spraybar on the fmic.. My trap speed was 115.86, hopefully the Vigilante / methanol/ co2 will get me another 3/4 mph trap speed. Truck weighed 3400lbs with 3/4 tank at the track. planning on removing the front swaybar, install my 13 gallon tank, abs delete. hopefully this will get me another 10nth. I guess everything counts..
