need help with my SY, fuel issue

i bought a syclone a few weeks ago its in great shape with just a tic over 40k miles...so pretty low, it has the 3 bar chip with 3 different timing curves and multiple boost levels, APR turbo back exhaust, cold air intake, 160 stat, intercooler upgrade that turns on the pump at 60 degrees, walbro 255 fuel pump, autometer boost gauge and fuel pressure gauge along with another fuel pressure gauge on the rail

heres my issue

turn the key on the fuel pressure goes to about 40 on both gauges which seems just fine, but motor has a hard time starting, cranks a bit before taking off, im leaning towards an injector leaking down

now heres where im at, it has the stock red topped injectors (30lb) but my autometer boost gauge will jump to 20-21 psi boost under WOT and fully spooled, so i was concidering upgrading the injectors to 40lb to go along with the added boost and external mods

is this a good size to go with? and when i do figure out where and what size to get the injectors i will be checking the pressure regulator so make sure there isnt a vacuum leak

any and all help would be great, its almost embarrising starting my truck when its cold, as it cranks for a good 10 seconds before taking off, when warm and after being driven it starts right up, which really leads me to beleive its an injector leaking down on me

nobody? .... well i unplugged the IAC valve and idle went up to 2k so im gonna go ahead and rule out that the iac valve is bad...im kinda down to possible vacuum leak, injector leaking down, or pressure sending unit? idk...i really dont want to through money at it to figure it out...up for ideas to check

Re: need help with my SY, fuel issue

Do you have Datamaster or TunerProRT to do some logging with? If not, that should be your first step. You can't really make any changes to these trucks without establishing a baseline as to how they are running, and whether or not the existing tune/chip is any good. If you're hitting 20 to 21 lbs of boost I can almost guarantee that you are running lean (especially with FP at only 40)... and are probably in danger of damaging the motor.

Do some searching for Datamaster (DM) and TunerPro..... best money you will ever spend.

Re: need help with my SY, fuel issue

well when the boost hits 20-21 fuel pressure rises to 50psi

it runs great when warm...its the cold start issue im concerned with

i have a STG ultimate 3 bar multichip set on t3.20 mode and it sems to run best there with 93

i also have a knock light that will indicate if the motor is going into the ignition retard mode and still knocking
also on the T3 mode it turns off the EGR

normally fuel pressure rises at a 1 to 1 ratio with boost.
if your at 40 add 20 more for 20 psi and you would usually be at 60.

x2 then x3. This can not be stressed enough. Also read this site several times, it is very good info for new owners.

Once you have datamaster or tunerpro, you can look at your injector duty cycle and tell if you are running out of injector.

Re: need help with my SY, fuel issue

You can't run much past 17 psi on pump gas. You can't just arbitrally change injectors if you don't have the chip to run them.

Here's what I would do: Turn the key to ON and watch the FP gauge. It should stay steady for a few minutes at least. If it starts dropping after 30 seconds or so then you have a bad FP or a bad FPR. Easiest way to check is to pull vac line off FPR and see if it smells like gas.If it does you found your prob(busted FPR) if it doesn't you found your prob(bad FP) (if the fuel pressure is dropping with just key on)

HTH's.

Re: need help with my SY, fuel issue

im really thinking its the injectors leaking down...it starts hard after its been sitting longer then 3-4 hours...

i can turn the key on and pressure goes up to 40psi at the rail...but the pump only cycles for a few seconds then shuts up...and it will leak down in a matter of 30 minutes i can see the psi at the rail lowering slowly

when i start it you can smell rich mixture

also the truck only has 40k on it and has spent more of its life sitting then running...the truck does have a walbro 255 pump in it and the boost does hit 20lbs but i do have a chip as well that i have set for 20lbs, also has a 3 inch turbo back exhaust and the cold air intake that sits in the right fender well....im going to assume im well over maxing these injectors...i was considering 36lb but am afraid i will need to take it somewhere to tune it...would the 36lb be ok with the mods i have and no tune? wont the ecu compensate just alittle and with all the mods done shouldnt it utilize the 36lb?

im really trying to get this thing fixed im afraid to drive it due to the rich smell and hard start i dont want to wash my cylinders

Did you even read what I posted?

Smell your ****ing dipstick.Check the ****ing vac line to the FPR.

You think this is my first rodeo son? Pay attention ,you might learn something.

Re: need help with my SY, fuel issue

and BTW my chip is the 3bar chip with different timing curves and settings for fuel/turbo requirements and it does say that stock injectors are nearly maxed out and that when higher boost levels are in place that the mixture will be leaner then factory settings...so someone please tell me the 36 lb will be safe to swap with no real tuning needs :) i dont think there is any place around here that can tune it and i need to get this thing going

Re: need help with my SY, fuel issue

dipstick doesnt have any real smell to it as far as gas...im not 100% sure on where the line is that goes to the regulator...is it behind the t/b closer to the firewall

There is a round thing behind the intake,by the firewall. It has a hose connected to the top of it.Pull it off and see if it smells like gas.

Sorry for being a dick but I'm just trying to help.

Re: need help with my SY, fuel issue

haha no its all good...i checked the regulator, pulled the vac line no smell of gas and no wetness, i have a fuel pressure gauge right on the rail and it went up about 10psi from 40 to 50psi, i read in my service book where it should be 35-36psi at the rail, so i adjusted the regulator, ill have to see how it starts tomorrow after the motor has set and cooled all night, i am finding the owner/s put alot of parts into this but did very little with setting it up correctly,

my trans fluid level is on the bottom of the XXX markings of the stick and the intercooler level was low, bout a quart if i had to guess by how much i dumped in it, ive only had this thing for alittle over a week and im still going through it all

another problem is my ABS and BRAKE lights are on, he did the BAER disc brake conversion on it perhaps didnt hook up the abs correctly?

atkonkler

Is this your bush?
Re: need help with my SY, fuel issue

Delete the abs with a abs delete kit from hood tuned performance or just contact SyTy guy/ Mike hood!

Re: need help with my SY, fuel issue

IMO its rarely a injector issue when people think its a injector issue. My *guess* its a chip issue. No way I'd run 20+ psi on 93 octane:2cents: You have to get a scan tool, guessing on what's happening will cost you a motor. I would start with cap, rotor, plugs, ignition module, fuel filter, just for kicks. Good luck!

Re: need help with my SY, fuel issue

Did this ever get resolved? I agree, 20+psi is too much boost on 93oct....

Re: need help with my SY, fuel issue

20 psi may require close gaped plugs-025
and more spark than stock-CD-
high energy coil- boost a spark- msd or something
