Modify Front Bumper for IC Airflow

I'm thinking about doing this.. Wondering what you guys think about how it would look...

The idea is to open the front bumper up some to allow better air flow through the intercooler..

My photoshop skills aren't the best. In real life the cut-out would have recessed sides like the fog light holes do...

What do you think?

I wouldn't. How much is a new bumper? Best part of truck I think. How much to upgrade the IC? Meth injection? Better options in my mind. Buy a crappy bumper and do it to that.Get some 402 Spal fans. What about a scoop?

That's a fiberglass bumper that I made.. I have a mold and can make more if I screw this one up..

I dig. Do it. Might need to run a piece of aluminum across the bottom to strengthen that thin area though?

What's the bumper support situation?

The thin area would definitely need reinforcement.

There is no support behind that cover. This is a pic of the back:

The mounting brackets are just laminated right into the glass...

That is awesome. Could laminate some mesh into the space after cutting too.

Very nice idea, and looks like you've done a very nice job there!
You could then paint the mesh body colour.

Seeing as this would be a custom design anyway, maybe another design idea would be to take out the stock CAI centre cut out and make the bottom flat (or even reverse the cut out and lower it, mirroring the angles of the cut out for the stock grill) and then replicate a smaller version of the stock (rectangular) grill. That would make it more symmetrical. I'm not sure how this would work though with the contour of the cover, more thought probably needed on that and could make it too low, but probably not lower than the scoops we see fitted.

Further on, you could maybe also model up some form of 'replacement' bumper support for those that feel the need and offer them both for sale at a competitive price :D.

I know there is a lot of time and effort spent in making mold/s, and the above would obviously not work with what you have made, just an idea. You have invested a considerable amount and it looks like you are seeing the rewards - Well Done!

put some aluminum crap in there, some Honda stickers and it will fit in with the tuner guys. Sorry, doesn't "do it" for me.

I'm sorry but this is what I see...

:D

Is that Tow Maters' cousin Ty Mater? :)
OP: It doesn't look too bad. The shape of the opening goes with the other parts of the bumper. Not sure I like it but I don't have to. If you want to try, go for it. Especially since it's a 'glass bumper so you're not sacrificing your stock one.

There was some kind of Toyota or other Jap van that pulled up behind me today with that exact same bumper cutout.

Mark, love the pic! Thanks!

Davemc1963, I've thought about some of the very things that you mentioned. Moving that lower part down I think would put a rather weak part too low. My guess is I would break it frequently.

I've also thought about making the opening a similar shape to our grill opening but just smaller but I thought this shape flowed a bit better with the lines of the bumper..

bezerk, Do you know where there are any pics of that cut-out?

Jimmy, You disappointed me. I saw you posted in this thread and was all excited to find some witty smart ass comment... Maybe next time..

Re: Modify Front Bumper for IC Airflow

I did some searching and found some images..

Black Death: Not exactly what I'm going for and the cut-out is just huge.

Syborg TT Sonoma GT: This looks OK but I want something a bit larger and recessed.

Syborg TT Sonoma GT CONCEPT SKETCH: This is almost exactly what I'm going for:

I'd leave the bumper, and go with a duct. The duct opening should be about half of the frontal area of the core.

Sorry.
