Kyle....get a starter for a 1996 Chevy / GMC truck, 3/4 ton with a 454. Bolts right up and is smaller than our stock starter. If you are not starting when the truck is hot, its probably the purple wire doing you in. Look below...

....you can either do this, or cut and splice a new piece of wire in to get rid of the existing crappy wire.

I put the "454 mini starter" in 4 years ago and it solved my "hot start click click" problem completely, and forever. I never touched my purple wire BTW. It was from Advanced Auto and I want to say it was called Palladium Gold. Mrweelr has a post on it in the archives.

Well if anyone is interested I should be able to get these gm mini starters cheaper than you are paying for them and brand new not rebuilts. I have said this in the past and only a couple people have taken me up on the offer. Just trying to help the community in a small way.

That starter will spin anything and it's frickin' tiny.

i never have done the purple wire upgrade as long as the wire is in good shape not burnt its not needed the click is because the solenoid gets hot and fails the purple wire is only the trigger ,wrap the starter with header wrap and wrap the purple wire with heat coverong and it will be fine.Think i got mine of of a tahoeand they sound cooler to .

Mine also had the starter click and I simply replaced the original starter with the 96 454 truck starter from Advance Auto, I want to say the part is "Palladium Gold P6449S" but you may want to check to be sure. It was about $120 and I never had another problem until 4 years later the starter died and they replaced it free (even though I had no receipt) because it has a lifetime warranty. However they did state I only get "one replacement".

Yup, it just bolts right up. It's actually smaller than the original. 2 long bolts (14mm?) hold it to the block from underneath, and then there are a ton of really small, odd sized nuts/washers that hold the wiring on the end of it, a REAL pain to get to, took a lot of swearing for me..
Make sure you disconnect your battery so you don't zap yourself. I'd suggest removing the passenger wheelwell also. (13mm).

I followed the recommendations above got the Advanced Auto mini-starter for a Chevy 454 (P6449S). The fellow at the counter warned me he wouldn't take it back if I got it dirty/scratched since it didn't match the original size I turned in, but luckily no problems and questions about core sizes. The mini is actually much easier to put in after monkeying around quite a bit to pull the old unit out. Works fine and sounds different. There's just one extra hex nut wire connection on it from the motor housing, looks to be ground? which I didn't connect. Assuming I'm ok as the original didn't have it?
Other reason for my post as FYI, I thought my ignition wire was close to shot but all wires and plastic cover tubing looked fine, just couldn't always start right after going for a longer ride. Thinking it over during the swap process had also been having an intercooler leak so that may have cooked the solenoid/motor insulation last month. So also replaced some intercooler fitting barbs routed through the fender in the process and hope to be ok.
Anyways, ministarter seems be good option, after hassle with original sized unit.
