Looking for a quick way to cool down in the lanes.

I was talking with a guy using an electric water pump on his 340 duster and he told me using the electric fan and electric water pump he can cool down to ambient in 5 minutes.

So I got to thinking. Since I don’t want to change my polished aluminum brand new pump from edlebrock. Suppose I use the extra plugged port on top of the pump for a return and use the lower heater hose from the radiator to the heater core with a tee in it. Then a separate pump between the 2.

Coments?

You better bring a battery charger or spare battery if your going to run your water pump and electric fans for 5 minutes.

i have run the electric fans for longer than that. only one time i left the fans on for too long.

regardless of battery power.... anyone done this to cool things to ambient

btw

i dont think in 5 minutes i will have a battery problem. the guy i was speaking with does this after each and every run. he is there a couple nights a week. and last year he won about 35k doing bracket racing so i think he knows something about this.

I just wonder if i would have enough flow compared to the existing pump to bring it to ambient quickly.

I am sure it works out great and i now have a electric water pump, so i will try that also to cool it down in the waiting lanes but i just dont think i would leave it on for 5 minutes, unless you have a yellow top optima battery, that would help .

Hmm... My bud has an electrical water pump on his Impala, but he also has this 'box' that switches between the fans running and the elctrical water pump running. 1 min the elctrical pump is running then it shuts off, then it turns on the fans... HE also has it wired up to one of those emergency booster packs. The one with a compressor, jump start, etc.. Well he just uses the Aux/Cigarette lighter to power the devices remotely... That way no battery drain...

I just had my electric fan wired to a switch and to the battery. If we were at the track with the longer lines just push it as the line moves. Or you can just find a track with shorter staging lanes!

PUSH IT!!! ::protestno::

no way jose! hey your talkin to a guy who is so lazy (unless he is workin on the truck or at work) he uses an electric dump valve to open his exhaust at the track so he doesnt have to get dirty.

The more i think about this the more i think it will work.

I might try using my ic pump here at the shop to see how quickly i can cool it down. and then go from there on plumbing another pump for this.

Presently in the lanes i have been using my electric fan on the radiator, another fan on the lower ic and having the ic pump run.

But the real heat sink is the motor and then the turbo.

Ed, I have the CSI electric WP and obviously the electric fans and the Griffin radiator. beleive it or not it takes about 1-2 minutes for my truck to get down close to ambient. It works pretty good.

al

do you know the flow rate?
than way i can properly size an external pump, since i dont really want to pull the polished alum edelbrock pump?

btw any idea how long the electric water pumps like that would last in a daily driver?

I spoke with CSI before I bought it and they said it was designed for a daily driver which is exactly what my truck is.

Sorry no flow #'s

i assume you are using csi no 901.

what i am looking at from them says it flows at 37 GPM.

and with that i got a plan!

now to go find the flow rate on these ic pumps....

thanks

Just a hint... Try all the above with a 2.5 gal manual spray water tank to spray your radiator while the electric fan (& pump if applicable) is running. This will lower the temp big time - before you get back in the staging lane.

Just for your info, i havnt had any good luck with CSI pumps, My boss is a crew chief for an IHRA top sportsman and pro stock race team, they switched over to the Meziere pump and have nothing but good things to say about it, and nothing but bad things to say about the CSI.....Alot of the High End Engine builders like Sonny Leanord and Reher Morrison all use meziere pumps on the motors they Dyno....Of course this is my personal experience, could just be my bad luck

well i plan on using my existing water pump with an external pump like i said between the plugged port on the edelbrock pump and the lower heater hose.....

then a pump like our ic pumps. only testing like everyting else will tell.

So if there is a failure it wont happen on the street i.e. it wont effect the reliability of the daily driver. One of the constraints in everything i allways consider in the setup.

Home Depot Deck Sprayer filled with Ice, then water works nice in the staging lanes. Just spray your IC and radiator, then let it evaporate off. Some tracks dont like dripping water so allow a little time for the water to evaporate. I spray mine after a run, get the radiator nice and cool. Then we usually have to move forward in the staging lanes a couple of times so the cool water is circulated... I usually stage with 150 or so temps. Much easier than rigging up some sort of heat exchanger and electrical pump, and quite effective.

Buy water injection.

I'm not kidding, last night was the first time I sprayed and after looking at the runs I was staging at about 130-135 and at the big end I was still only 135-140. That was with just spraying mainly water and just a little rubbing alcohol mixed. I was pretty impressed being as I'm running 20lbs of boost on stock turbo, creating a truck load of heat. For comparison, without the spray, I started at about 110 or so on the street before going to the track, by the time I hit 100mph i was looking at pretty close to 160.
