Pretty labor intensive, prolly spent 18 hours on it this weekend. But MUCH quieter on the highways, and a steam cleaned/q-tipped interior=NOICE :D .

PS: ZERO RUST

Thats the Old Man's "project" ;)

1970 El Camino, Big block/461 cubes (very gnarly build), 400 trans, Etc. Best part are the Sunbird seats! Probably the most beautiful sounding car Ive ever heard (not biased either :D ). I'll find out all the rest, has had it for like 13-14 years now, been built up for 6-7...cant remember all the details. We kinda have a thing for "elkies"...this is his 3rd :) .
Just waiting for that damn rearend to grenade.
I can get more pics if you'de like :)

Nice, i was thinking about doing that when i replace my carpet... How much would you say all that weighs and where did you buy it? And how much did you need?

Thats the route I took with my ty. You'll notice the squeeks and rattles will be deminished significantly.

Gotta do the roof too!

Looks really good.. Too bad you didn't have a dB meter to get before and after readings.. Like everyone else I would like to know how much it weighs and how much it set you back.. Did you coat the inside of the doors and tailgate as well?

Thanks,
-Matt

Re: Interior removed/insulated(56k=OUCH)

Nice work. I just bought some directly from http://www.mfmbp.com. Local Lowe's doesn't carry it.
$108 for 100 sq ft, including shipping. I bought as 2 rolls each 18 inches wide. Weight is .33 lbs/Sq.Ft. so 33 lbs if I use it all.
Went thru the interior on Sunday, chasing down rattles and squeeks. She's pretty quiet now, just need to reduce road and exhaust noise and it'll be perfect. Nice pics.

Thinking of inventing a gizmo to shake the truck at various frequencies to help diagnose rattles in the garage.

That looks pretty slick... maybe I'll be doing some of that before I lay my new carpet ... spent this entire weekend redoing all my interior plastic in satin black ... I now have a permanent black-chrome finish

Re: Interior removed/insulated(56k=OUCH)

I think my materials cost was like ~$125 tops frome Lowes, I installed 100sq/ft EXACTLY. Just enough to do the interior, endgate, and "doubled up" on the Trans tunnel, under seats, and body mount areas. I know for a fact the stuff is Budwieser proof...prolly the only liquid I had for 2.5 days of working on this (ask Jeremy :D ).

Total weight was like 28 lbs. Time to work on getting some of that wieght off. The new CVR mini starter helped with about 6-7lbs of that

I know, I need to do the headliner too. Just a lil scared of ruining that thing. Eh...prolly not a big deal at all compared to the rest of the interior :) . I did run a 6" strip around all the back windows.

I am doing the Doors this weekend (hopefully). I waited to do those because I'm installing new window track "guides", and a new Pass. side window motor. WAY tired of squeeky windows. Those were horrible on the way home from nats--> AC stopped working+had to roll them down+100mph=LOUD  .

I also replaced all the Door striker pins...the rears were pretty worn, made a BIG difference on the rear glass BS squeeking.

"Your spending too much money on that mofo!"

Naw, I could do a LOT worse, as long as the Ty doesnt demand my money...I'll blow some on it :rotf:

Re: Interior removed/insulated(56k=OUCH)

What is this stuff called at Lowes and what is its intended purpose? Is it called "peel and seal"??

Thanks,

Yes, the stuff is called "Peel and Seal". The intended purpose of the stuff is to patch gutters, roofs, really anything that it stick to, and it is VERY sticky :) . It has a rubberized asphalt/"butylish" adhesive.

Look in the gutter/roof dept.

Re: Interior removed/insulated(56k=OUCH)

Peel and seal is made for roofing. Some people use it for sound deadening in cars but I would not recommend it. Audio sound deadening mats are made from a butyl compound. Peel and Seal is rubberized asphalt, which is basically bad news. It has extremely low temperature tolerances. If you put it on the roof of your sy/ty you can expect it to melt over the summer and start coming off. it will liquify at the passenger floorbard where exhaust runs underneath it and create a nasty pool of asphalt that will run and seep from
underneath your carpet. You can expect your ride to smell like a freshly paved road if you park it outside on a hot day. + peel and seal is known in the state of cali to cause cancer and birth defects.

When I did it, I was unable to tell the difference (including the smell) between the quick-roof I put down and the original stick down padding that was there ... who knows, hope it doesn't melt cause I have a brand new carpet in there :(

You'll have to let us know how it has worked out in the fall.. If you don't run into any problems over the summer I will probably install some then..
