intercooler question

im thinking about getting the big ATR liquid intercooler for $895. has anyone had any good or bad experience with it? does anyone have one for sale?

With bad motor mounts, I could see that happening.
I had to bend my AC accumulator over because it kept hitting it, not the box. But again, I had bad motor mounts.

For that kind of money, I'd go with a DeQuick or Kenne Bell air/air intercooler. You'll gain a lot of room under the hood and won't have to screw around with an extra cooling system anymore. Just my $.02.

Do a custom setup.

These are my opinions (take 'em for what they are worth).

KB system sucks, small core, horrible piping. Good for a 12 second truck, but then again, stock IC works on a 12 second truck.

ATR air-water - ok, it is massive, and will scratch and possibly put a hole in your AC box. Still a water to air unit that is cluttering up your underhood. Makes it even more of a bitch to work on the truck.

Dequick - piping fits like SHIT, will require work to make it fit nicely. If you order direct from him, however long he tells you, multiply that by 10, you may get the intercooler then. I had a prototype on my Syclone back in the day, I assumed he had problems worked out on the final product. I was wrong.

acutaly, good for a 10 second time slip. but everything on that truck was wrong.

If the KB unit can run 10's is it safe to assume the stocker can as well, from my experience the KB unit is very comparable to the stocker performance wise. It's my option the fastest way to blow 2000 plus dollars on 3 tenths is to buy headers and intercooler upgrades. I know of two trucks that have ran pretty damn fast with stock exhaust manifolds and the stock intercooler (ty-118mph, and a sy-118mph), so is it really worth it or should we spend our cake on a PTE turbo and water injection???

Serious about performance
1.) So it sounds like if you are running high 11's or slower, you are best off with the stock IC system and stock exhaust manifolds, because money spent overhauling these two items is money more effectively spent elsewhere, right?

2.) If I took a 13.0 second truck and swapped the stock Garrett IC for the ATR "massive box", what kind of gains would I see? (estimate so you can give me a value)

3.) Do headers really only give you some portion of 3 tenths!?? Holy shit! I was under the impression they uncorked a massive HP buildup of some sort. I could swear someone on here said they gained 4 tenths, untuned, without doing anything else but adding headers.

Something has to materialize in one form or another in an Air to Air setup that fits and works well for our trucks soon...

I agree, for the money I'd get an air-air. I have the ATR unit and the heat exchanger which adds up to more $ than an air-air, and it still has problems with heat soak, it does a pretty good job though. No problems with the AC box.

Brian we didn't have any problems with the piping on the DeQuick, only had to space the fan out a little with some washers.

With a stock turbo you'd have to figure something out with the discharge though, because the DeQuick is designed for the turbo to be pointing down.

Kinda on the same subject, is there a good heat shield available for our tubos? I think that would eliminate a lot of heat soak. And how hard is it to get a Bob Galla pipe?

I have had no problem with the ATR hitting the AC box. I trimmed the IC to TB hose to allow the IC to get as close to the TB as possible. Also jethottted Turbo (exhaust side) manifolds, DP, crossover and used Thermo-tech heat shield material on the underside of the IC.

I really like the improvements over stock, but if you don't mind loosing the stock idea and look of the "intercooled" syty, then the A/A the option.

The list is right about costs, to make the air/water perform to it's max, you will spend for upgrading; aux cche, fans, pump, rerouting, etc. Cost you another $300-400 depending where you get your parts.

I saw Dustan's new setup and think it is one of the best setups with the least cutting of the truck and the shortest piping runs.

And my $0.02 is: Do a cheap custom setup to start with e.i add more coolant to stock setup and a good pump that can provide a good flow of coolant throug the system and some fans behind or infront of stock heat exchanger. Depending on how fast you want to run, like they sad if you want to run in the 12's you don't really need to spend all that money on fancy IC system. Spend it on something else that will give you more HP per $$. Here is a quote from a very good book (Maximum boost by Corky Bell) that everyone interested in turbos should buy:

"Although complex, the water-based IC enjoys the one terrific advantage of far greater (fourteenfold) heat transfer coefficient between water and aluminum than air and aluminum. This huge differens is of huge value only if all the heat transfer barriers can be optimized such that the 14-to-1 rate can be of benefit.
The focus of the problem on handeling the water is largely centered around rate of water flow, amount of water in the system, and the subsequent removal of heat from the water."

My opinion is, i used to think air to water sucks and air to air is the only way to go. But after having a air to water IC system and reading about different setups and seen the IAT in my logger compare to air to air IAT i change my mind about IC system. I will never go back to air to air again if i can get a air to water system to work with just small modifications. Like i posted before i bought a IC coolant reservoair from a 2000 Lightning that i'm going to install where the battery is located i'm going to add about 3 quarts more coolant to the stock system and i think it's going to help allot to transfer some heat away from the water. Reason is it takes longer to heat up the water if you have more water in the system and a good pump that can supply the IC with fresh cold water, think about it how long are you under full boost during a race? 8-12 seconds that is not enough time to heat soak all the water in a system if you have enough water in there.

But what do i know :smile: I'm just a goofy dude from Sweden? :smile:

Ps. Look at all the big boys running drag cars with turbo. Allot of them are running water to air setups but they have a huge fuel cell in the back holding gallons and gallons of water to cool the intake air. I even thought of putting a big water reservoair on my bed for my IC :smile:
