Injector removal steps

Search function is down......

I'm about to pull and swap out my sticking injectors that DGOODHUE just hooked me up with ( thanks buddy ).
I've never had to even crack a bolt hardly on this daily driven Sy ( knock on wood).....so I wanted to only remove the items needed to swap out injectors after I bench clean/test flow them.
I also have the group buy EGR block-off plate to install.......same questions. I was planning on just using grey gasket silicone for its seal. Is that enough of an effort ??

Cheers,Vinny:)

Re: Injector removal steps

If you go to advanced search that form is still working.

Just put 50#s in my truck so its all still fresh.

Remove the TB and upper intake.
You will need a new upper-lower intake gasket.

You will want to put new O-rings in the injectors before installing them.
They are a common GM part so the local places should have them in stock.

Relieve the fuel pressure first and make sure your battery is disconnected.

Remove the fuel rail by pulling up on it gently front then back wiggligna bit to pll the injector O rgins out of the lower.
If you still have the black installation clips in place the injectors shoudl come off with teh rail.
Gently twist them one at a time to remove them from the rail.

Do the same to re install.
A little bit of oil or vaseline on the orings makes it all pop back together easier.
With new Orings things can be tight going back in.
DO NOT over torque the fuel rail to manifold bolts or they will strip or worse yet snap off.
A broken fuel rail bolt is ultimately what caused fivetodrives truck to burn.

on the EGR blockoff I would use a stock EGR gasket that is intended for heat instead of some RTV.
unless you plugged your upper intake you are still getting EGR gases all the way up to the plate.

Is the intake gasket available at places like O'reilly's or only at G.M. ??

Same question for the O'rings??

On the EGR plug.....don't you have to drill and tap the hole for plugging ?? If so...I guee that is best done while I have it removed.

Intake gasket is probably not gonna be found in your neck of the woods but you can try.
Be very careful removing yours.
If its never been apart I imagine its gonna come apart n pieces.
I believe you coud get away with using RTV on teh upper / lower but I have always used a new gasket there anytime its damaged.

O rings are common gm efi parts.
Any parts store will have those.

You can plug the EGR passage in the upper will its apart.
It is recommended to use JB Weld when you drive the plug in so that it never backs out and drops into the lower end.
I didnt plug mine fwiw but I do run an egr gasket on my billet alum blockoff.

I think MC did a write up on plugging his when he polished it to a mirror finish.

Re: Injector removal steps

I can't remember the size (3/8" or 1/4"), but I used a threaded aluminum npt plug to plug mine up.
That way if for some reason you need to go back, just remove the plug.

Cool, good info.:p My Stealership didn't have the gaskets of course.....neither did O'reillys. I guess I'll have to make one from gasket material. Otherwise.....the Cheverolet Dealership takes a week to order it in.

I'll try and find Mike Campbells write up on the EGR plug in the meantime.

Its a funny thing.....I haven't had to really spend a dime on this truck until it hit 95K miles.....then I lost the wiper motor relay...then the wiper motor....then the blower motor....then all the control fan switches....now the fuel pump and injectors.....and all my vac lines have finally rotted into swiss cheese, lol.;)

Truckless. For now.
Re: Injector removal steps

Vinny, check with Mike Hood at Tucker. When Aaron and I swapped intakes, that's where I got my gaskets from

Re: Injector removal steps

Ok....I found Mikes thread. He used a 3/8's tap and a BRASS plug. He also staked the threads instead of using JB-weld to set it.
I personally will use JB weld as I know that a propane torch can be used later to soften it and remove the plug instead of staking and damaging the threads.
JB-Weld will, hold tight at those temps until torched and rotated with force.

I got several things from Mr. Hood in the past. I may have to order a set from him for future worx. But since I need to get this animal out of the work place tomorrow...I'll have to just make one.:(
