Improvements on running A2A intercooler on a stock truck

Im really considering running an air to air intercooler on my stock truck and had some questions on doing this setup

How much weight would I drop from running an average A2A intercooler?

What kind of power difference can I expect from goin A2A?

Is there a kit that I can run without having to delete the a/c?

Is it possible to buy/build a kit off ebay thats worth doing and not total junk?

The truck is practically stock with just 3" exhaust, 255 pump and ATR chip coming as soon as I can locate one

Back when our truck was stock like yours I did a FMIC .. 3bar MAP and a Basic 3Bar Chip that Jeff burned for me. I ran 18psi on 93 and the truck went consistant 13.0's@100mph. (Typhoon) with no Knock.. She (wife) raced it all year that way and drove it daily.
You'll see a more consistant intake air temp that is much lower than your WTA IC.

The IC size that fit's behind the stock grille is 31x3x12. Here's a couple pic's of the setups with stock engines.

Minimal weight loss, I would guess 10#

I dunno if it's worth the expense, a good pump and HOTWIRE. A lot of people running quick times with a lot more power and mods that are still using a W2A set up. It looks cool though. Save the cash for good tuning and maybe meth injection.

Thanks guys.
My goal has always been 11s, or low 12s, gonna start pulling weight soon, just browsing through some old threads, thanks again.

I have had good luck with it. Its get for hot laps. Heat soak is not near as bad as the stock cooler.

I didnt have a chance earlier to respond completely. A a2a will have consistent temps as Scott mentioned, it will be higher at the beginning of the run than the stock if but lower at the end. That being said you can get lower than ambient temps with ally on either set up. A bigger advantage of the A2A is the drop across the core. A good a2a can drop as little as 2.5psi, if I remember right the drop of the stock w2a is 4.5psi. For stock turbo running 14 psi, the pre IC boost is 18.5psi. You could run a good a2a at 16 psi at the same efficiency as the stock w2a running 14psi. In Theory you could a stock turbo further with A2A because the lower pressure drop.

Tooky (old member) had a write up where an A2A setup that cost about $800 gave 0 power gains over stock.

Keep the stock setup and get meth and then you're golden.

qbnkiller ran 800hp on his motor with NO IC and used meth (he was on a dyno in short runs but you see the advantages).

So stocker stays then, I have the meth kit but I get too lazy to install it, where would you guys "T" the vac lines for the meth kit?
My kit is set for the windshield washer fluid

Re: Improvements on running A2A intercooler on a stock truck

I will put money that in a hot lap competition that the front mount wins over the stock air to water. My stock one would start to boil and would kill my bottom end until the alky came on. Just my experience.

I highly recommend a/a. Mine was easy to install and fairly cheap! Also if you run them, Electric fans seem to aid in keeping it cool to the touch..

I made it. All of my mods are custom. I didn't go with any kits or prefabbed stuff. It might have been easier but I wanted it the way I wanted it so I did it all myself. I have a setup made that I used for testing that I have for sale. its everything to the right of the intercooler.

I'm putting a $80 Derale7" Tornado fan on the lower IC and tying it in to the ECM so it runs when the truck is at low speed/stopped.

$80 for a fan and then whatever you spend on the Alky. Each to their own though.

than you really need the dutchty lower CC to keep up with that.
alky rules man. you know......liver.......get drunk...better than an fan hitting your face looking like a fool

Re: Improvements on running A2A intercooler on a stock truck

Just a little fuel for fire so-to-speak. I run 12.8 @ 105 with a stock IC, full time pump and alki. BUT I have an unusual track. Infineon is commonly cool with a head wind. Waiting in the lanes I leave the key on to run the pump and just the wind flowing across the lower IC, if it's cool, will cool the upper IC to ambient. Believe it or not.

All bets are off if it's hot. Couple of weeks ago it was hot with no wind. ET's slowed .4, huge difference. Hot lapping dosen't seem to make that much difference actual outside air temps do. At least in my case. I'm considering a larger, in front of the radiator, IC water cooler from this outfit:

Re: Improvements on running A2A intercooler on a stock truck

i have a bigger liquid inter cooler-atr
second aux cooler behind grill- atr
street bike fan mounted to lower charge cooler
no alky

i run 13.0 @104
22 psi on pump gas- no additives

It's just a six

I run a stock intercooler w/a ATR aux radiator. Non working Aquamist at that best time.
Best time is 12.08 @ 108
