Re: Heads

How much do you want to spend?

The heads are pretty easily available but you will need to machine your intake and have some material welded to it in order to mate with the vortecs. You need to have the heads machined as well to accept the bolt pattern as well as having to block off some water passages.

L35 heads will bolt right in and need to mods so that is the cheaper easier way to go but the vortecs are regarded as being the best bang for the buck.

I think Brodix and pontiac heads are even more expensive but I know nothing about them.

With the vortecs you'll need bigger injectors so therefore a different tune and you'll find that your turbo is not operating as effiectively due to more air flowing and overboosting.

What are you running for engine management?

65lbs from SIEMENS or the Mototronics ones are pretty darned good for injectors.

Cams vary but off the shelf a 415 or 422 would be good with the vortecs.

You'll need new plugs as well - NGK TR5s or TR6s, not the CR42Ts for the stock engine.

I reckon keep the 98 heads - search for vortec casting numbers - I'm not sure if there are many differences but that's basically it.

Re: Heads

The 95 Jimmy is a CPI L35 (They all were) and even though it says "Vortec" all over it,it is an L35.not a true Vortec motor..Hell,even our LB4 engines were "advertised" as Vortec.

The Vortec with the desirable head is from '96 up.only.
