Not trying to side-track the post, but have you ever thought of pet insurance? We have 3 dogs and a cat and it costs about 100.00 a month. If you start it when they are young it is even cheaper.
One of my dog's was a stray we took in and and has cost $$$$$$ to get her healthy:
Heart worms, brochitis, mitro valve displasia (heart murmer) and has just been diagnosed with septicemia and a urinary tract infection. Her medication alone is $220/month and she has to have regular MRI's for the heart murmer.
To date, we have spent well over $6,000 to get her healthy. All costs are paid up front, but you get reimbursed 80% within 30 days. Our actual cost to date is 1200.
Unfortunately not all insurances cover pre-existing conditions, but some do. Normal reimbursement is about 80ish percent.
My wife says to stay away from the Banefield insurance (PetSmart).
