General opinions about my 1/4 time on the Ty...

well i went to a test and tune at bandimere speedway (5280 above sea level) and pulled a 14.6 @ 90mph. heres where i went wrong...

at the launch, i couldnt build any boost. if it started to build the rear tires would start spinning, and i did build line pressure by reving it in N with the brake pressed. i think the track was just shitty because it did a light rain and they didnt really prep the staging area after that. i launched at maybe 2psi and just stuck it in drive, rather than shifting each gear.

we ran turbo link on my truck during a launch on the street the last sun. and it showed that my truck was making full boost, but was slightly jittery because my waste gate is sticking. so im just gonna get a manual boost controller to fix that. T-Link said i launched at 14 psi on the street.

i got a 2.03 60ft with the maaaaybe 2 psi launch. does a 13.9 seem possible with a 10+psi launch and me shifting perfect? because if so im hell bent on getting that 13 in stock form, because at sea level thats a low 13. (F U Lightning )

im also going to check the rear drums and make sure they are doing ok. i tried the e-brake launch, and we'll just say it didnt go well :(

manual boost controller + stock turbo/wastegate = blow up

save your money on that, get an external wastegate

just revving the motor while pressing on brake don't do jack shit, you have to rev it up ONCE, and let the throttle slam shut, when it decelerates from higher RPM, it will generate higher vacuum, and you should press down on the brake hard when the RPM is settling down from 4000 RPM and the throttle is closed.

If you still have wheelspin, adjust your rear brakes, clean up the shoes, etc. It can do wonders.

Not sure what mph to expect at your elevation.

E brake launches= screwed up rear brake backing plates & shoe retention pins. BTDT.

Put the cheapest no name, no warranty having, chain store rear shoes on it you can find as they are soft and will hold better. Get TWO sets so you can use primary shoes on both sides instead of one primary and one secondary shoe on each side.

Cost= ~$25.00

Adjust the shoes so that they are ~1/32" off the drums. I do it by adjusting the shoes and installing the drums several times until they rub when the drum is rotated then I back the adjuster off slightly.

Cost= free (ok, so it may take you 20 min per side to adjust them)

Freshly turned drums

Cost= ~$10.00

The above WILL hold 14.5psi with NO slippage and Ive got video to prove it (it wont hold 15psi though and Ive got redlighting vid to prove that too :( )

race or get outta the way
do not try to shift yourself.

also do not use overdrive! you want it in regular drive!

I did this as well, helped a bunch. That self-adjusting crap is BS.

Also helps when your axle seals aren't gone, and the coating of grease is removed

I had problems with my rear brakes in my Sy holding more than 4psi. I add 7/8 wheel cylinders and I can easily hold 10psi (that is all I have tried). A 10 psi launch is my sy is smoky sideways burnout. Their is a big difference in 0-2psi and 5-8psi launch though. IMO Its going to be tough to shave off .7 of your 1/4 mile with a better launch, .4-.5 no problem, .6 or .7 isn't impossible, but you will need some luck.

As for you wastegate sticking, our stock turbo don't have solid boost control. It is common to have the boost move around at WOT, because of our wastegate design.

I forgot to mention that... Ive got those also. They are ~$15.00 each and you'll need two.

Wheel cyinders =$30.00
Can of brake fluid =~$8.00
An hour to bleed the rear brakes =free but a PIA

Keep going to the track and get to know your truck. Don't jump to any conclusions before you get it to the track a few times. You said you may shift it, does you truck shift at low rpm?

well when i got the 14.6 i left it in 4th and it shifts arround 3500rpm in 1st and arround 4000 2nd and 3rd. but the diffrence in how fast it feels vs. a 10psi+ launch is monumental, thats why im guessing i could pull a late 13.

thanks for all the help, i wish i could honestly say i cant wait to get on those drum brakes, but well, i can. :-? im going up again next week and ill see if i can mess with the drums and get them working better before then. the dual primaries sounds like a good idea, but how does it work on the street? my ty is my daily, so i dont want to fuck up the drivability too much.

if i decrease air pressure in the tires, will that help the launch? ive heard that works good on AWD DSMs but didnt know if it would help sytys at all.

Also i know leaded gas fucks up cats, but will 4 gallons of 112 mixed with 1/2 tank of 91 do it? im hearing sputtering at idle from the exaustpipe and am thinking i blew the cat. no big deal since im going to remove it anyway.

So you're planning to get an external wastegate or modify the stocker then? If not, you'll most likely have boost spikes (due to less backpressure on the turbo with the same crappy wastegate) which will cause overboost codes and thus a slower truck.

yea i was planning on a boost controller set at 15 psi just to keep it near stock, but if they suck i'll have to go with an external wastegate.

it still feels just as strong so if the cat is going out its not effecting performace too much yet. if my times are considerably slower then i'll know the cat is dead and i'll replace it. then i'll just do a 3" turbo back exaust with no cat a dump and a louder muffler with an external wastegate. then when emissions time comes along i just bolt up the legal exaust, come home and put the illegal one back on. the new exaust would be after i pull that 13 in stock form of course.

or should i just give it up and start modding it since i know at sea-level its a mid 13 which is where lightnings are anyway?

You don't want to let air out of the tires on a SyTy. This has been addressed on here many times. I run 40 front and 28 rear. If your truck is shifting at 4000 rpm, you may want to manually shift it. Many people will tell you not to, but I have been doing it for 50 + runs at the track and for 3 years of street racing. It is tough with the stock chip due to the rev limiter. First gear is kind of quick. When you are not revving over 4000, you are losing a lot of power. 10 psi seems high to launch. I launch at about 4-5 psi on the track 1-2 on the street. Don't waste your time on the stock turbo. Just buy something bigger and better. And you need the Ultimate chip.

I suggest the ult chip too. I have prety close to stock system, with no cat, and a high flow muffler, and i dont overboost. I've had my turbo portmatched to my exhaust manafold and that did the trick.

If your low on cash, the boost controller DOES work, if you keep it under 15lbs, like 13-14. But if you mess up and go too high then of course you'll overboost.

I'm only saying this because when I got my ty it was 99% stock with a boost controller. and it ran pretty good when i turned it on, and could get about 12-14 lbs of boost.

well i was planning on changing to a PTE in a year or so, but im only wanting to do fairly minor mods right now. i know with a bigger turbo a 12 is possible even at my altitude, but im not ready to be breaking shit left and right. personally i think its fast enough for my daily driver, but i want to see it hit a 13 in near stock form. a 14.6 is still damn good for this alt. and 4000lbs, but thats what new camaros run up here and i eat them on the street left and right.
