finally,perfect idle

after 2 years of rough idle and a rich condition,its fixed.the intake gasket above #3 & 5 ports was dropping down into the ports.they were the original gaskets and looks like they were that way since assembly.i knew i had a vac leak.replaced vac lines,map,o2 & iac.had the injectors cleaned .did everthing i could think of and nothing helped till totally by accident i was spraying carb cleaner and there it was,the big leak.now it PURRRS and no suet at start up.thanks scott [ur50slo] for the gaskets and advice,your the man !

With the compression test you did and everything came back even and good it had to be a leak somewhere.

I think with a little tuning on Datamaster and the Ignition parts you'll have a real different feeling in the seat of your pants.

Completely tuned up my Ty today...got the same problem. Wonder if my gasket geeked out... :roll:

I remember years ago Ed Hess did everything possible to cure this issue.... it was later on when he was swapping the motor I believe that he found the lower intake gasket to be the issue. Same deal with Don

Just as long as its not a blown piston, Ill be happy. Will run a compression test hopefully on thursday. Wish me luck.

This is a "semi-known" problem and not at all that hard to check in most cases. Engine warm and running. Use a spray can carb cleaner with the straw extension. I actuall use two and a fery small length of rubber hobby/ RC fuel line. One straw in the spray can, then the rubber hose and another straw in the end of the hose. Makes a nice extension for getting into tight places and pin point application of the spray. Any way, start spraying down the outside edges of the lower intake at the heads, just below the valve cover flange (or any where you think you may have a vacume leak). Small change in idle up or down = small leak. Big change = big leak!
We had one so bad I don't honestly know how it even ran. Pulled the intake, changed gaskets and all was golden!

NOTE: Other things can be used like starting fluid, WD-40 and others but be very careful about using flamables on a running enging around plug wires, exhaust and ignition in general. WD-40 is a good bet if in doubt and gee's.... a little common sense.

Already done that my friend.. No vacuum leaks, well at least around the areas i tested. But, it could have a leak somewhere the other side, or underneath. Its hard to actually know whats up until you remove the intake. I could also have a bad valve, if anything.. will know soon. Keep ya all posted. Thanks for the info James. :tup:

Yea if the gasket screwed the pooch on the bottom side, can't tell unless you pull it.

James, it looks like its the lower intake gasket for me too. I noticed my rear intake seal has blown out too. When i slightly rev the motor i can see a lil' bit of smoke appear from behind. It looks like its that time. I installed a new dist. yesterday..still no change. Well, i guess its time for a tear down. Peace, Karl

I think Ed also had problem with a leaking TB axel
