External gate on the dyno

Dynoed an external on the crossover today on my beater Syclone. Tomorrow I will retest it with the internal hooked back on and hooked up. Lost power on the stock turbo with an external gate. Curves are very similar but torque is down over 45 ft pounds. Power is down almost 20 hp. Same boost levels too. See what happens with it back on the internal and if the power comes back to what it was.

i don't see where you would loose power with an external. maybe it leaks?

Re: External gate on the dyno

I think on a 20g or turbo with a larger turbine wheel it would work better. Maybe the HKS gate I am using is too large. When it opens, its venting off a large amount of exhaust.

There are no leaks with the setup. Crossover, tube, flange, gate or dump tube. Had it on my garret setup on the other Syclone. Plus its all heat coated, would see any imperfection in the welds.

The internal is all back functional now. Going to test it again one night this week. All I know is the stock turbo seems to like the internal gate for the current setup. If the power is back where it was last week then I will have my answer.

Have a 20g and housing with a larger internal gate. Will test that this winter then put the external back on for it.

The testing continues.

I wonder if your stock gate is creeing open under heavy boost...maybe!?

his problem is the ext. causing lack of power
Yeah, but if the internal gate isn't shut completely it can still bleed off some exhaust. Wiring it shut doesn't always guarantee a great seal there.

Re: External gate on the dyno

I removed the stock canister, made a bracket that went from the pin on the arm to where the canister bolt holes were on the turbo. No way could the internal gate open.

I've seen turb cars on the dyno with no line to the canister and watched the internal gate open at high rpm and boost drop off. Exhaust pressure will open it.

Might try a different spring in the HKS gate. Nice thing with how the setup is I can test the external, then unhook the boost line to that gate, put the canister back on and lines to it then retest it.

Will post up some results by this weekend.

Are you just running off of the waistgate spring or do you have the hks contoller aswell!?

I know just running mine off of the spring in the delta gate and turning off my in cab hks controller only gives me about 13lbs max. Low is set at 14psi...high at 18psi...and i've banged 25psi on the manual setting.

Re: External gate on the dyno

I was using a manual controller. Typically use the Forge or Hallman on most turbo cars. Not a fan of electronic controllers. They are great when they are working. Just seems to be one more thing to worry about. See it way too often with lost wire connections, vac lines, leaks, box just stops working. A manual controller has a better chance of being repeatable in most casts. I like its track record and reliability.

Ended up swapping the HKS gate for another I had. Pulled the original apart and it had a semi light spring in it. Couldn't find the heavier springs I got here someplace. So put on another whole HKS gate sitting here with the second to highest rated spring HKS had for the standard gate.

Ready to retest it again. Probably this weekend. Been dynoing other stuff. Got a feeling it has a chance to pick back up.
