Engine Temps High??

Hi Guys,
Trying to get the Sy dialed in for its first highway trip tomorrow to a Sy/Ty meet in Tulsa. Work hasn't allowed me much time to do much lately, but I took it out on the highway tonight for about an 18 mile cruise.

Conditions...
160 Thermostat
Radiator flushed and new coolant
heater plumbed into top of water pump
26 degrees of advance at cruise (65-70mph)
14.1 - 14.8 AFR's
stock fan, new clutch
18 lb radiator cap
100 degree ambient temps :(

Result...
204 Engine temps at cruise with air conditioning on
200 with AC off
197 with heater on

Is this too high, especially with the 160 thermo?

Thanks for any input!

Re: Engine Temps High??

I'd put a flow restrictor on the heater bypass to make sure more coolant circulates through the radiator.
On the Syclone I run a -4 line to the heater core.

My Ty with a 160 t-stat, EOC delete, using the radiator trans cooler & 11"x11" B&M trans cooler mounted in front of the core support runs the same temps on a 100deg. day.

Thanks for that info... I had been thinking about going to Home Depot and getting a brass ball-type valve and installing it (on in winter, off in Summer). I just went out and used a couple of smooth shock washers and wire ties to crimp off the line... I'll see how that does for me tomorrow.

Thanks for the reassurance! :D

Re: Engine Temps High??

I would say it is high for a 160 stat but not that it is over heating mine was running pritty hot and then I put a 180 and that is the range it runs now.

But there may be something to the restriction goint to the heater core becuase all you would be doing is going threw the core and back to the engine

Re: Engine Temps High??

Have you verified that the 160 stat operates close to that temp? I have seen some that are more like 175's so that could explain being higher than you want

Shroud in good shape?

Nope, one thing I didn't do that day.. was in a hurry for some reason and just plopped it in... I'll see what the temps do with the heater line blocked.

Re: Engine Temps High??

i just installed an auxulary cooling electric fan on the bravada, 12" and it fits perfectly, no cutting of the support, and my temps went from
200 no a/c
220 with a/c
to
170 no a/c
200 with a/c

a/c is waaaay colder!!

average 55 degrees vent temp but gotten as low as 45 deg on an overcast day.

specs: 160 thermostat
heater valve shutoff
1 16" electric fan "puller" tied to a thermostat relay on at 185 off at 170

1 12" electric "pusher" fan also tied to thermostat relay

also both fans are triggered on by the a/c system cluch for max cooling under a/c conditions

Your temps seem OK for 100°F ambient.

The thermostat does NOT control "operating" temperature. It controls MINIMUM temperature. Big difference.

For sake of conversation, if your minimum temperature is starting higher than what you are thinking it should be then wouldn't this cause your temps to be up as well?

Where I am coming from is on a stock s10 I owned it would ride at 210 with the stock thermostat. I switch to a 160 stat that actually opened at 165 and temps sat at 170 with only the thermostat change.

Re: Engine Temps High??

mine runs 160 all the time but when in traffice it might go up to 190 or so,i also have electric fans, and i know the newer style s10 radiator is also better for cooling that i have ,abd the edelbrock pump

Re: Engine Temps High??

i'd be scared to run 200 plus my sy's never seen over 186 weather it was with the stock clutch fan or the volvo efan with my 180 thermostat

100*F ambient temps at night in your area? Brutal!! What are your coolant temps during normal/reasonable air temps?

The upper temperature is controlled by the fan clutch. The stocker engages around 215-220°F. The MAX temp is a function of air-flow and the radiators' ability to transfer heat into the air-flow.

Very few people understand how and what a thermostat controls. It is MINIMUM coolant temperature. If you have a 160°F thermostat, and are running 160°F coolant temps in 100°F ambient, you have one hell of an efficient radiator and fan set up. Or are running down-hill at 70MPH with the throttle closed.

Don't be concerned with your temps. The heater valve will help.

Yup, good call there Dave on understanding the cooling system. It was 105 on the way back from Tulsa yesterday and the Sy (with air-conditioning on pulling some minor grades) got up to 213 a few times.... the clutch engaged whenever it got above 207 and stayed engaged till it cooled back down (doing its job!).... driving at 80 lowered the temps about 5 degress from cruising at a 70mph speed.

Blocking off the hose from the waterpump to the heater core dropped it 3 degrees (I would have thought it would have done more than that).

I think I'll switch to the Aerostar plastic fan and see what it does (I sure appreciate the way its designed).

Thanks for the input.... I've got some DM runs if anyone is ever interested.

Hey Josh, I normally run 187 around town with the air-conditioning off (90 ambient).

Hey Brian, settling in at highway speeds with the A/C it settled in at 13.8. The truck felt really good, got 16.7 miles to the gallon..... What do you run yours at on the highway??
