E85 people ENTER

Is the stock fuel tank okay for E85? I hear fuel deposits line the wall of the tank and could get dissolved in E85 and gum up the fuel system.

I have a stock tank (with sump added), Qbnkiller does also. You will be fine.

Re: E85 people ENTER

I heard the same thing. Call it overkill but I didn't want to take any chances with a very expensive fuel pump chewing up rust or whatever.

Here is what I did...

Eastwood.com has a very nice fuel tank kit that is E85 compatable.
(I emailed them and confirmed it was E85 compatable)

Here is a >>Link<<
Expect to pay another $15. for Muratic Acid and Acetone to complete the entire process.

I used this kit on a new tank but it will work on an older tank also.
You can also buy all the components of the kit separate if you don't want them all.

The holes are for a sump I welded into the bottom of the tank. They are suppose to reduce slosh and retain some strength in that area of the tank by drilling round holes instead of just cutting out the rectangle.
The white is the coating that is the final step and the kit was enough to coat it twice. You just roll the tank around to coat it all over.

Re: E85 people ENTER

Does that mean we wont be able to buy it?
I have been running e85/93 mix for a year in my Sy. I get 0 knock retard and runs great no Probs.

Re: E85 people ENTER

E85 around here is about same as gas now, it was $1 gallon cheaper about a year ago.

I had assumed the subsidy ended but I could be wrong. At some point it will be cheaper to just buy cheap whiskey for the tank.

Re: E85 people ENTER

I was under the impression it was no longer subsidized in 2012.
Guys running the stock tank with E85. How long have you been running it?

Re: E85 people ENTER

I have been running e98 now for over a year which is more corrosive than e85....Stock sumped tank. Ive used about 200 gal of e98 in that time with very few problems. You have to make sure the rest of your fuel system is e85 compatible, filters, lines, etc. Do not use paper element filters only stainless steel. I have a 100micron pre pump filter with a 40micron post pump filter that will be changed next season to a 10micron that I recently found.http://

Re: E85 people ENTER

What fuel filter? Do I need to worry about the stock FPR? I do have an adjustable FPR from Detroit turbo that I still have around. Not sure if thats E85 save either.

Re: E85 people ENTER

I use Aeromotive filters....I believe as long as its a stainless element it will be ok with e85, I have tried a few paper elements and they have gotten destroyed by the alcohol.

Not being sarcastic at all here but, do you guys think E85 is really worth it? I set my fuel system up to be able to run it on a mechanical level but to be honest, the more I look at it from a financial point of view, seems a LOT cheaper to just run pump and meth. I know the failure of a meth unit can cost you a motor but I do have a controller that pulls boost in that event. Other than reliability, what can you get out of E85 over pump and meth from a performance stand point?

Re: E85 people ENTER

mike i am far from an expert , but there is a whole forum on this over on the buick site. there are guys running 30+ psi on e85 without problems. there are new pumps out that are close to the price of walbros, and flow 340lpm, and are warrantied for 3yrs even using e85. qbn is running it in his truck and i know its all in the tune, a lot of the campell motors are tuned on e85 if im not mistaken. but they are making more power on e85 then most are here on race gas and meth. less moving parts equal less chance to fail, only have to tune one system, only need one tune for your truck, no multiple tunes for different boost levels. tune it for whatever boost level you are going to run and set your boost controller.

Re: E85 people ENTER

Yeah but damn, it costs about $50 to fill up your Ty/Sy, then you get maybe 7-9 miles a gallon? I guess since I try to aily drive my truck it seems impractical. E85 isn't cheap anymore either. In fact, I don't see it sticking around much longer. I could be wrong. There is only one company in town that sells it and that is Western convenience and there are only four locations here in town. Right now E85 here is about $3.20. Premium is $3.19. I thought the whole point was for e85 to be cheaper. The on top of that, the company here that sells it has been busted a few times for falsely advertising the octane rating or what ever it is they go by. There are some threads on the local racing forum that talk about it. It's interesting reading.

Still, I run in to more and more people running it these days and they absolutely love it. I guess I just don't see the benefit as far as cost goes, consider I drive the truck daily that is.

Re: E85 people ENTER

High octane, cooler burn, easier to find than race gas, engine runs cooler, cleaner burn, less emmisions, more power, higher boost ect....

Re: E85 people ENTER

Premium here is 3.60 a gallon, e85 is hard to find, but cheaper than premium. Considering you can run the same or more boost on e85 than you can on race gas @ 12+ a gallon, its a bargain.

Mike, if you ever try to get a real nhra tech inspection done on your Ty you will see you will have major problems passing with the meth injection.....tank can not be in the engine compartment, if its in the vehicle it will need a rollover protection valve vented outside. Just one of the reasons I went e98.
