Do you need to topcoat por15?

Hey fellas i want to apply some por15 to the frame and suspension components. I was reading the info on their site and i found this http://www.por15.com/POR15-CHASSISCOAT-BLACK/productinfo/S9G/

I also found that some people were selling just the por15 and they stated the color was semi gloss black so i am a bit confused here. Is por15 already semi gloss black? From por's website it seems to me that you need the chassis coat if you want to have a semi gloss finish. I am allo going to be spraying some areas. I have read that you can thin the por15 and was wondering how that worked out for you as well? What brush worked best? Foam or horsehair?

small rollers work well for flat areas DO NOT USE FOAM it will disolve. POR 15 is suseptable to UV damage, chassis should be fine, I even used it on the bottom of the mower deck , in fender wells I also use bedliner, thin coat, over POR 15

Por15 does not need a topcoat. It is semi-gloss. 2 coats is near gloss. Sprayed on from a 1.3 tip gun is gloss.

I don't think the belly of the truck is gonna get much sun.

the frame will fade, even though it doesn't get much sun.. you are supposed to top coat it if you want it to maintain the glass black color.

my old neighbor was president of the company, he insisted on top coating everything for it to last a life time.

That was my next question. I would like to do this once and have it last and not fade. I have two different air powered guns to use. One is a general purpose and the other is an hvlp. Should i run it through that one? Thanks for all of the helpful info fellas.

General purpose will probably work. This stuff is murder on guns. Maybe get a cheap Home Depot $25 HVLP and use that. 1.3 tip will give you the best finish.

Top coat is the way to go. We use it on all the frames, and on a number of other stuff in the shop. We always top coat, even if it won't see the sun, as its worth the piece of mind, and will not fade, and be less suseptible to chips/cracks. And yes if you're going to spray it, grab a cheapie gun from HD or HBF. HTH

Thx guys. I placed ther order this morning. Grabbed some por15, chassis coat, Stirling silver, black engine enamel, metal prep and thinner. I think im good to go! The salesman said that if you are at a car show with the hood open the por15 will literally break down in as little as two to three events. He insisted on a topcoat.

I painted my turbo exhaust manifold on my 280z with por15 and its still holding up strong 5 years later, I mean there isnt much sun inside the engine bay, but still.

I've seen people paint frames with it and no topcoat, but you never know, the sun is a killer!

I didnt use a topcoat years ago on my sy . In some places you can peel off a paint flake where i sprayed a 2nd coat later that same day , that was over a freshly sandblasted frame . The first layer is holding up though , go figure ?

I agree with eric , topcoat it .

Some guys let parts sit out in the rain and let it rust before coating. It's a better bond. Their metal ready doesn't always do the job on smooth clean metal. :squint:

Here is old (left) vs fresh (right) POR15

I also found that applying it to rusty metal it adhered much better.

No one has mentioned this but doesn't POR15 recommend a base prep before applying it? I've always just used it from a transfer container.....

Re: Do you need to topcoat por15?

POR-15 recommends hitting the metal first with a Phospho treatment, then a marine clean. I did my '73 Grand Am that way and I'm in the process of doing my '66 Chevelle now. Works great. I don't remove all rust first, just a thorough hit with a coarse handheld wire brush to remove loose stuff and vac it with a shop vac. Then blow it off with air and the three steps above.

Re: Do you need to topcoat por15?

I like to sand blast the frame to bare metal, apply an industrial grade primer (Dupont Kolar series) and then a catalyzed top coat. Your top coat can be any gloss % you want but for the purist it should be 30%. The Kolar primer will seal the surface and you never think of rust being under your coatings. It gives me peace of mind. But that's me. I don't like rust even if it is a binder for a coating.
