Re: Frontmount I/C install

you're absolutely right.....I looked at those a few weeks ago but since I didn't have them in hand, I couldn't visualize the piping or physically mock them up...I wonder if the walls are thick enough?....I know they offer a kit "without" the clamps and couplers...those clamps they show are kinda sucky....

I just picked up and installed the two elbows I'm using for the core to 3" pipes and realized that we could squeeze 2, 4 or maybe even 6 couplers out of what's left over after I trimmed them...these cost me 16 bucks a piece at napa....they're for a semi truck and have a nylon belt in them....good find Clint....keep the ideas flowing!! also, it's looking like I don't need the 45 mandrel bend after all.....

Re: Frontmount I/C install

Update...added photos of my alternate plan for I/C to TB piping....please let me know what you think because the idea is starting to grow on me....ultimate radiator clearance this way....one additional 90 is needed for this making a total of five instead of four, for the entire project...you can check out the photos here

Earlier I mentioned that I didn't need the 45 mandrel bend anymore...that hasn't changed....Well, I found a use for the (90) half of the Ubend that was left over....just need to cut about 12 inches off of it and use it to complete the circuit....fits perfect...so that means this can be pulled of with only the two cut Ubends pictured above...no need for the 45...bad ass ....just need for my 90 degree silicone 3" to 2" reducer (pictured below) to get here and I'll be in business...well, also waiting for the 4" to 3" TB coupler....and BTW, I'm not even going to need very much of the 3 foot, black radiator hose either...the napa elbows left enough over for this...

Re: DIY Frontmount I/C install

What about going behind the motor with the TB pipe Servando? It looks like that would allow you to still run the stock fan, which would help with engine cooling especially since you are adding a large front mount in front of the radiator. Just a thought. It would also keep you away from potential voltage drop problems of running a large electric fan.

Is there anyone who has put a large front mount in front of the radiator and kept the stock or near-stock radiator without experiencing cooling problems (I'm talking on a street driven truck, not a trailer queen). If yes, what type of fan is being used (electric or stock)? I've wondered about this for a long time, and I've never seen anyone with a street driven truck that has this setup.

would a 3" pipe fit where the intake crossover tube normally goes? That would be perfect for avoiding the fan and still getting the piping where you need it.

Or another way I was thinking of setting it up would be to re-clock teh turbo so it is facing downwards. Then route the tubing under the fan shroud to the drivers side. Go into the intercooler in the front then let the other side go straight to the throttle body. A little bit more piping but you would still get to keep the stock fan assembly.

Mark,

behind the TB wasn't possible for me with 3" unless I run without a hood or remove the windshield wiper motor on the firewall.....I don't know if 3" is better than 2.5", but I had already purchased the 3" thinking it would fit around behind the TB...I was wrong...As far as the fan is concerned, I've been looking for a reason to remove the stock fan for quite some time....I have more than a few reasons for this....I've read about voltage drop problems but I think these problems stem from improper wiring and improper relay usage... Plus, I can't wait to control my electric fan with the stock ecm...I've been doing some reading over a the hotrodders forum and they swear by running 2 relays when running any combo of electric fans....2 in parallel when using a "single" large electric fan and 1 relay for each fan when running a dual fan setup....I purchased a 3000 cfm volvo OEM fan with shroud that is of similar dimensions of our radiator that is going to work  A simple test for electrics is to hold a lit lighter ~1 foot from front of the grill to see if the draft sucks the flame out...I'll be sure to try that....I don't think I'll have cooling problems with typical IAT temps lower than radiator coolant temps....I might relocate the IAT sensor closer to the A2A core later to test the temps there....Obviously, my truck is far from a trailer queen (I'm sure you can tell by the engine compartment photos  )....I built it to beat on it....I drive the hell out of it when It's not down....Rain or shine, I drive it.... I'm not much into the track thing....Just blasting around town on a cool night when it's safe to punch it....

please read about the wiring kits I'm purchasing for wiring the fan....just scroll down to where it says "for ELECTRIC RADIATOR FAN SYSTEMS" ....I'm buying 2 of these kits btw....

here's one more link about a guy with a 16" electric that had a problem where his voltage indicator would drop way down and his lights would dim when his high amp fan would kick on....read about his fix by scrolling down this page....

Did you check out my plan "B" photos ? what did you think? You can almost fit a stock fan in there if you use smaller diameter pipe....check out this photo...2nd gen s10 with a syclone motor...they made it work....I'm set on electric though for many aforementioned reasons, but It looks like it could be made to work with a stocker if need be....It also looks like my fenderwells are going to clear ok as well....

Thanks Sevando

I've spent more hours then my wife & work would like on this project. I've had a lot of help from some great people on and off this list. Big Al from Florida has been a major asset and great help. Also the new chassis changes are Troy from Rad Rides fault.

I just hope i finish this thing before i run out of money which is happening quickly.

Stock radiator for now and i use a twin fan (three speed) from a diesel car that is really good.
I just have some cooling problems cause i installed the big tranny cooler and oil cooler in front of the radiator. I have to do some changes there.

Hey Marty, wont the air be hot with part of the A2A behind the radiator ?

Re: DIY Frontmount I/C install

hey guys.....here's an update....some parts I needed came in while I was gone over the weekend....all of these pipes pictured are going to be replaced with the aluminum ebay ones.....I'm using all constant torque t-bolt clamps....later we'll use the steel pipes as a jig to weld up the aluminum ones where we can....I also fastened the metal end tank 84-89 vette radiator and the volvo recall 3000cfm electric fan ....I hope the cold air intake I'm setting up will work.....I figure it'll take just a 3" hole saw through the passenger fenderwell....the driver fenderwell isn't even close to the 3" piping....the cobra elbow pictured is every bit of 2" from the radiator....those 3 ebay links will be dead in the future, sorry....
