Difference between retail market value and trade in value

The KBB trade in-value of the Sy is something in the range of $15k. Retail value is more like $9-10k in this market. If buying a new car wouldn't it make sense to trade your Sy in, get the $15k credit, and then buy another Sy for $10k?

I know there are a lot of other variables involved (negotiation, discounts, etc.) but this actually looks like it will work for Syclones.

i think in the end you're the one paying that $5K out of your own pockets.

Gotta check KBB real quick. Those prices seem backwards.

Think you have those backwards.
I just ran a 91 Syclone with 100k miles for 37013 and results on KBB are:

Trade in:
E: $11,425
G: $10,850
F: $9900

Retail:
$14,900

Private Party:
E: $12,950
G: $12,325
F: $11,275

Re: Difference between retail market value and trade in value

The last dealer I spoke with had the trade in value at about $15k. Numbers are all over the place when looking at the different websites.
Edmunds:
*Trade-in $3,249
*Private Party Sale $4,989
*Dealer Retail $7,890

NADA
Original MSRP $25,500
Low $10,450
Average $15,500
High $20,900

If offered $15k would you trade in your SyTy assuming your retail value is about $10k (Stock Sy with 62k miles)?

i would not trade in my good perfectly Sy or Ty for the chance of buying one back for 5K less.
no freaking way.
you know that 5K is gone verry fast, rebuilding engine and transmission, replacing FP and whatever

What kind of car would you be looking at to trade for?
That could have something to do with a high estimate as well.
If you trade a car in on a $60k Lexus, they are going to offer more TIV than if it was a $20k Honda.
