This is tempting. I need an 80e rebuild at some point. Is there any way of buying this and storing it somewhere for 6-12 months while I get things taken care of over here first?

Since this is out of a van I would bet that it has the long spline output shaft that can just be cut down to the correct length!!! No need to put the 4x4 shaft in at that point! Someone should really pick this up!

Sure. I have a whole room full of car parts, no big deal to add a trans to the pile!

I'm going to have to wait for another one of these to come up - have a wedding in the next 3.5 hours so need to prep for that! Thanks TeeTopZ - another time? :D

Not sure why the big deal, it's not for a 4x4 and that's about what a core is worth around here, for a 4x4 one.

but that's Canadian money :D

around here I have a hard enough time finding a '01+ trans to begin with, but when I do they are $300 - $800 usually

I can find the 1991 - 2000 cores in the $150 range sometimes, but other than parts they are of no real use to me.

no friends who own transmission shop or ones who go to wrecking yards? Find a guy who sells to the transmission shops, he usually gets them for dirt cheap, sells them to the shop for them to overhaul and then the shop builds them and sells them outright for a grand or more. Paid $125.00 for my 4x4 80e and rebuilt it.

Everyone has a different view on what is good or bad. When I got mine I wanted a new core myself, then after having Rossler rebuild it due to issue with the first trans guy's build, he almost refused to rebuild it being newer, and prefers the older cores.

I personally don't know which is better, but I suspect a properly built one will last in a syty no matter the year.

X2. I got a core for my buddy at a local scrap yard for $20 a couple of years ago. It was just laying in the middle of the lane, didn't even have to pull it. There are deals out there, you just have to be at the right place at the right time. Either way, someone got a good deal :).

Yes I agree, I have a 97/98 case I picked up, mainly because it was the right price, I have read about lots of things regarding the different generations, including poor oiling and part wear, but in the end if its done right, what significant problems can exist? The 4L80E in my Silverado potentially has 347,000 miles on it right now and no problem.

I used to beat the shit out of the one in the 91 Dually I used to drive at work, which was behind a 6.2 Diesel and 4x4, it hauled a 12,000+ lb excavator a few times a year, I would shift between gears without coming anywhere near a complete stop and I'd shift into part before coming to a complete stop. It would never die, the truck ended up getting sold when it was upgraded and still shifted just fine. Breaking a 4L80E is possible, but they certainly don't fail a whole lot on their own.

That adapter on the end, mine had one also. I had it in the truck when I was picking up recycled oil from another trans shop. He gave me $45.00 for it. He said he would buy all I could find. $20.00 is a great deal, even if everything is shot inside it.

I wish there were junk yards around me, looking online, the cheapest salvage yard 4L80E is $825 and 50 miles away
