Broken transmisson pan bolts

In an attempt to replace the fluid and filter in my transmission today, I discovered that the pan bolts are going to be a problem. I started to loosen the first bolt, which felt snug but not really tight, then the head of the bolt broke off even with the transmission casing. Assuming that the bolt just broke, I attempted to remove two more bolts with the same result.

Anyone have a suggestion before I try any more bolts just to have them break? This is the first time I have tried to remove the tranny pan because the fluid/filter was replaced just before I purchased it 2 years ago. Perhaps someone used an impact on these last time?

I would use an impact to remove them as it sounds like the previous person installed the bolts with one. A cheap electric impact will pay for itself when you arent forced to drill out the rest of the pan bolts because they are broken off.

Ok, i will give that a shot and see if that yeilds any better results. Btw I do have air tools but didn't want to try it at first because I thought they would continue to break.

Also does anyone know what size/thread the tranny pan bolts are?

The transmission pan bolts are metric flavor, M8-1.25X20MM long to be exact... Your only avenue to get the broken ones out is a set of bolt extractors :-? . Penetrating oil *may* help if you can get any in there... Fortunately, the stock bolts are grade 5.8 which is relatively soft (reason why they also broke in the first place) so, the drilling should go pretty easy. HTH's

Well, a total of 5 bolts broke. Thanks for the bolt info. Once it stops raining I will have to see about getting the broken bolts out :-?

Thanks for the info and suggestions

Trans pan bolts

Trans pan bolts

An impact gun on Trans pan bolts ? I thought I had heard everything - what a moron ! U might check the valve cover and oil pan bolts while U R at it, maybe those were put on the same way.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I suppose I did a few things like that, back when I was 17.
