Boosting the 3/4 305 ..(229ci.

Fist off...Great site. I've been looking here off and on for a while looking for info on theise rare super SUVs. I'm fairly new to the 90* V6 but long time Ford turbo 2.3, and 60* GM v6 fan. I've also played with a turbo 4 '88 mazda MX-6 GT.

Well im doing a engine swap on my 87 ford t-bird turbo coupe. The 2.3 had the HP and tq..but not the ability to hold together on the long run (121hp per liter on a 3500lb car). The engine is a rebuilt 229ci I had collecting dust, then I plan on max porting, caming and turbocharging it. Trans is beeing swaped for a v8 thm350. Maybe now I can pull the front wheels off the ground  . Well I'ved searching but nothing comes up. Heres my questions:

Is the 229s Crank better (jurnal strenth) since its semi odd fire over the even fire 4.3? If not.. At what tq should I consider swaping to a 4.3 engine. Mind you..I will see 6K rpm at the most.

Are the cast pistons OK at just a little under 350hp/ 400tq for now? Will 305 forged slugs fit?

Will the spark timming stradagy/fueling from the $58 code work correctly using the semi odd fire dizzy with a ecm controled HEI modual? If not..is there a patch for the code (cylinder select/refrence angle)?

Edit: Sorry I forgot to ask..but are sy/ty exhaust valves inconel? Will the stock valves work?

I don't know a whole helluva a lot about what you're asking, but in terms of valves, our heads are stock LB4 4.3 heads; no different that whats on a NA S-10. Your other questions will probably require input from our builder members.

The oddifre won't work currently with the stock ECM and those who have used it in bowtie block with aftermarket ECM's have had some problem getting it set up as well. Oddfire usually it equals = $$$ buildups. Oddfire cranks are stronger, but the even fire with 4 bolt mains can make quite a bit of HP.

I assume the 229 has the same issues as the 305, the bores are too small to accept larger valves. Most poeple don't build up 305 because of this, 350 aren't much more expensive (eseential a core block) and its usually only cost effective if just happens to be laying around.

IMO skip the 229 because its going to be a too much of hassle. I am sure you could get it to work with enough money, but it would be far easier, because of the oddfire issues, to use a 4.3. I have no idea about the 229 head exhaust ports, spark plug angles or bolt patterns compare to a 4.3.

Re: Boosting the 3/4 305 ..(229ci.

Well I just rememberd the turbo ford guys lock thier electric dizzys at the track and get away with it. Maybe I'll just set it at 0-10* and let the HEI spark advance curve springs take it from there and adjust the base as it goes. I wanted the chip to controll the dizzy because of spark knock and boost retard. All while today...I realised it doensn't have a boss for a knock sensor. I'll hook up the ecm to the modual...but no ecm control.

Actually..im building this thing on a few hundred bux. Im using the old 3.8 dual jet intake fabed with injectors and im working on the TB (early vortec intake won't fit the fat odd fire HEI, Holley intake was my other option..but this one should do). I've pulled the heads and they are just like the 305 but with better casting..no big suprise. Only thing is the intake port has a funky bulge and dip after it on the roof of the runner just before the valve guide. This looks like it hampers flow alot. Other than that..I just finished porting them. But that part needs some expoxi or something along with the back side of the port behind the seat. I don't see the valves or bore beeing an issue. I think I can squize 170-190cfm out the exhaust. Theise heads look way better than the centerbolt heads as far as flow. Well see how it goes.

Thanks for the replies.
