IIRC, Phil Long went 10.9 on stock engine and green dot tires..........

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. Is there a place where there are a few tech articles on how these guys got the recipe to work??

Chassis, You will find that the motor from your GN and 4.3 in a SY/TY are very different.
The 4.3 has horrible flowing heads witch make for lots of detonation. The rods are weak and almost always the failing part on a stock block. Spun bearings from all the detonation as well. The Gn stock block is a bit better. The tune on these trucks must be perfect in order to run deep 12s high 11s. Along with supporting mods. You will find swapping the heads to the new style Vortecs are a huge advantage along with a larger turbo and supporting fuel upgrades. My typhoon gave up the goose @ 12.40s. Spun rod bearings 30,000 mile motor. To be optimistic with out a tremendous knowledge of these trucks i wouldn't expect to get much faster than mid 12s on a righteous stock unopened block.

For a stock truck , the 2 things I'd focus on that will help you get the best times is your boost launch , and 0* of knock retard . Most substandard runs can be attributed to one of those two things .

It's just a six

I think the 3.8 engines blow head gaskets very often from detonation/tune is off.

There heads flow worse than the 4.3's I believe, I know hard to think so, but they do have very small bores & very small valves. 4 bolts per cyl.

I have not done any tuning via the ECM ,just over the counter products bolted on & a Frankenstien turbo I done, I make sure to keep intake temps down, watch for knock & A/F ratios.

The more parts I bolt on (carefull selection of parts) the faster my Sy goes. So far 12 flat & the tune is way off.

Yes the Buick head flow worse than ours, but their design it more detonation resistant than ours. Asa mention aboveif the tune is off they blow the head gasket.

Phil Long forum handle is turbo6, so if anyone wants to do research on his build.

Re: best unopen engine 1/4 mile time...

Thanks for all the replies and information. On the cylinder head gig, we have access to a few different things here in the midwest. I have an excellent engine man who used to run Pro Stock and I see some engines in there from racers right now who still do race Pro Stock. I am interested in why I see so many of you guys use the Vortec heads. We have a Rottler machine with all kinds of crazy software.....he is in Newton Ia.

I am looking to get the TY by the end of this week or next depending on my schedule at work. It is a weekend trip thing for me as we are busy building parts for the ALL STAR Race in a few weeks.

I see you guys talking rods all the time. What type of rod is the aftermarket putting out for the TY right now??

Is there a cylinder head porter you guys are using as a group or recommend??

Stock heads (LB4) flow on the Intake ports in 150's (cfm), L35 170's, Vortec 220's. So of the factory heads available Vortec flow the best by far, they also have heart shaped combustion chambers which makes them less prone to detonation than LB4 and L35's.

Not a lot of manufacturers make 4.3 V6 Rods. Eagle rods are pretty much aftermarket rod available and the rod of choice. Fortunately they are a good strong connecting rod. In the past Oliver made a set of rods, they were expensive and hard to find. You can machine a set of 350 V8 rods to fit a 4.3 motor, but its cheaper just to by set of Eagle rods though.

My friend went 11.64 @112 (7.52 @92) in his Sy in 1996. The valve covers had never been off.

Re: best unopen engine 1/4 mile time...

mine just went 11.70 at 116 with a 3lb launch. 10lbs launch would have put it in the low elevens..Stock unopened lonblock. Ive since changed some things (VIGILANTE 3400 3 disc conv, RPM EDELBROCK INTAKE, FUEL CELL WITH BRAIDED 8-an feed lines and weldon fpump.) Im now looking to get the thing to break a 10.99. Im running lots of timing 26/28 and tuned for c16 fuel. My truck weight is aprox 3300 lbs with 4 gallons in the fuel cell. :D The down side is its not a very street freindly build!

Re: best unopen engine 1/4 mile time...

when you say street friendly, what do you mean?? hard to drive because of the stall or does it surge quite a bit???

street driving to me is I can drive it to work and get a race or two on the way!!!....lol

Re: best unopen engine 1/4 mile time...

what i mean by street friendly is cost to drive. Im paying $13.90 a gallon for c16. My truck drives on the street just like a stocker. Heres a HD video of mine ideling. Video says 10 sec Syclone which is just a estimate until it goes back to the track. Ive got my fingers crossed!!
