Auto Addictions engine destruction!!

Tore down the engine today. Crank snapped in 2. # 2 cylinder has huge hole. The front of the block was broken in 4 spots. Heads are ok, valve train ok, 5 pistons ok 4 rods are ok. Cam is fine. Pretty luck overall. Time to step it up to the bowtie.

Amazing at what can happen when a Crank Snaps! How much HP do you think you were putting on it before it went? I am curious as to what HP levels a stock crank can take.

That was a grenade wersion of block destruktion.. :)

I would presume that a stock block right treated could withstand some more power with a good crank and rotating assembly parts

I'd say the block would not have held together even if you hard block filled it completely to the top . Getting to that level alone is quite an accomplishment , congrats .

I was hoping to see your stock block ty in the 9's . Do you have the other bowtie ready to go in , or do you need to build it up still ?

Re: Auto Addictions engine destruction!!

i'm confused, is this the sy or the ty? I would assume the ty since the sy probably isn't making enough power for that kind of carnage...

He smoked the trans in the SY. This is the TY motor.

This shows you how strong those Eagle rods really are. Lots of bends but still one piece.

Frank,
You should start another thread about the transmission (Syclone). He has pictures of that too. The output shaft broke and killed a bunch of other parts in the trans too.

That looks familiar... Wasn't long ago I had 7 holes in my oil pan and pieces of rod and piston laying on the back rear from bouncing off the road...

Any ideas on the next build yet...

From how fast frank was going I would assume that motor was making upwards of 700hp

Should be making better than that, or was making better than that before something let go, unless the tune was off or something caused it to go lean at that moment. Sorry to hear Frank. Better luck with the next build.

Re: Auto Addictions engine destruction!!

Did you have any block fill in it? Was the crank treated at all? What were all the details of your build and where do you think it went wrong? If you were to use a stock block again or to do it over what would you of changed? That is some serious carnage. I'm' sorry this happened, I was really starting to have some hope in a stock block......Maybe there is something we all can learn from this.

Hope in a stock motor.... isn't this what he achieved? A best of 10.27. This motor had 350 passes on it. I would think that the stock block and crank are doing pretty good at these times. How fast do you want to go on a stock block?

No fill in block. Nitrated stock crank. 40 over 9 to 1 compression eagle rods ARP everything!! Pro gram 4 bolt center mains. I dont think the fill would of done much in my case. The tune was spot on and my timing was still conservative. The crank just broke it was a clean snap right in the front. The uncontrolled rotating mass is what broke the block. Im sure the eagle rods would of held up to more power as well. Would i do it again. Dont think so. In my case i have 2 bowtie blocks and most the parts to build both of them. pistons, rods, ect. I knew it was going to explode soon. I was pushing it hard to get that 9 sec pass. I would feel comfortable with a built stock block running high 10s. I made hundreds of low 11 high 10 sec passes on my engine it held up fine. I would guess i was making 825 to 875hp at the crank when she let go. That was the limit on my crank. From engine to engine im sure that # will differ based on just how good the tune was. I can tell you my tune was nearly perfect. The bearing looked brand new inside the motor pistons did 2. With a Billet crank i believe mid 9s is possible, at that level your concern would be head gaskets blowing from all the flexing and heads walking all over the place.
If your going o spend 3grand on a crank might as well go bowtie block.
