air bags

Hi. I am 16 and looking for my first car. I really love the typhoon, the only drawback is that it doesn't have airbags. My mom would never let me get a car without airbags. So i was wondering if it is possible to have both a driver-side and passenger airbag installed. I know the price might be steep but can someone give me an idea so i can start lookin for a summer job.

I doubt that you could get it done for anywhere near a reasonable price.With the right amount of money,it could be done,but so could a twin turbo AWD 71 Hemi Cuda convertible,if you had the money.

Buy a daily driver POS with air bags, then buy the Phoon. Just my opinion :wink:

I remember getting an E-Mail some time ago that asked something like, "If airbags were no longer mandatory for vehicle manufacturers, and were optional, would you request them?" . I answered a big fat NO!! Basically IMO, seatbelts are the only thing that can save you in an accident, so buckle up and dont rely on air bags, they hurt you and can burn you pretty good.

I would agree that seatbelts do save lives... My wife died in a rollover three years ago because she didn't wear her seatbelt.
But my daughter (4 at the time) came out of the accident without a scratch because she was strapped in her carseat.
The airbags never deployed even though the 4runner rolled 4 times...

2nd, 3rd and 4th that! Choose wisely, there are many cars/trucks that arent sy/ty's that are tight, are cheaper and more expendable, if you really like the trucks, hold off.

I agree 100%, can't stand those air bags. I won't own a car that has em' and I don't want my son to drive a car that has em' either. Just get ya a big old 70 impala with alot of steel around ya, you'll be fine. Larry.

If your looking for a car to drive just because it has air bags, dont think about a sy/ty. I'd hate to see someone install air bags in a truck as rare as these, it would look stupid. Tell your mom even with air bags, you can still die.

I agree with the new driver and the syty's Dont get one untill you know how to handle another fast car or truck. Start with something you know wont brake down alot, you dont need to put a ton of money into, because I'm sure you'll be using it as a daily driver, and you probably wouldnt have the money to keep fixxing the syty because you do to many launches, and brake things in front of a group of friends that think its cool to see.

Take that as you will.

At 16 yrs old, I'd say the airbag arguement is one you WILL NOT win.

4 yrs ago when I first wanted a Typhoon, drivers airbag installed from the alcoholic body shop guy down the road was about 2G's.

The people on the sidewalks in your neighborhood are the ones she should be worried about with a new driver, not airbags... :lol:

Some of you guys sound resentful. I thought you would want to spread the love to a new driver. You constantly rant about your great cars. I don't know why you wouldn't. Maybe 'cause they didn't have syty's when you were 16. Also, I have lost two cousins to car accidents (no drinking was involved in either), so my parents definetly want the most protection possible for me, while still having a cool car. Sorry if I offended anyone, or brought you to reality.

sorry to hear about your loss, but you should be looking for a Volvo and not a performance vehicle then.

the reason we don't like to see new drivers buy these trucks is because most all of us wrench on our own trucks, and are constantly dumping money into them to keep them on the road. most new drivers don't have the time, know how, or funds to do what we do. we discourage it so much because a lot of times people buy these trucks, abuse them, get frustrated that they break and sell them again. we like to see these trucks in the hands of people that treat them right.

do you change your own oil, do your own tune ups, pay your own insurance, etc. etc.? I wanted one of these when I was 16... Got one when I was 21. there's no way I could have afforded my Ty when I was 16, and I'm glad i didn't have one then.

as to safety, i should post the picks from joe's teal ty. after seeing those, i feal very safe in my typhoon. it's amazing that he walked away...although, if the pole hadn't been there, it might have been a different story.

dude dont take any of this seriously just go buy a syclone or typhoon you only live once so why not enjoy it just do it carefully all you need is a seatbelt.
they are not bad on the maintenance if you r not driving it hard all the time

I'm surprised to hear all the people who hate air bags or say they don't work. They DO work, but ONLY in severe frontal impacts.

The 4runner that rolled - of course they did not go off. They will go off when they are most needed - when you hit someone head on at high speed. They simply protect you from hitting the steering wheel and the front windshield. A rollover usually has nothing to do with a major frontal impact, but a side impact. (Now, if you have side airbags, they should go off.)

Air bags are a good thing. One of my friends walked away from an amazing accident, partially due to seatbelts and airbags. His car was totally otherwise.

Think you could live through that without an airbag? It's the drunk or distracted drivers you should direct your attention to.
