i forgot the name of the place that did the engine work, but the dipstick hole is plugged with silicone and i wouldnt mind having an oil dipstick for peace of mind.

i heard this was pretty common... what is the solution? thanks.

you have to notch the main cap to allow the dipstick tube to slide in. shoulda been done when assembling the engine.

I didn't notch the main cap, just bend the dipstick tube so that it clear the main cap.

ya you bend the tube as you insert it so that it clears the cap.

what kinda caps did you use? that also makes a differeance.

so a factory dipstick and tube will work then. i will have to pick one up to see if it clears whatever caps i have

I had to grind a notch into my main cap & grind a flat on the washer as well.

I used a tube from 02 vortec motor and ground the stick itself a little to make it more flexible...now with a little jiggle jigle it goes right in.

if you use a program cap, you can use the stock dipstick. with milodon or similar you have to grind the cap a bit.

Is this for a stock pan or aftermarket? I want to install one on chris's aluminum pan but the stick will not make it to the sump of the pan. Does the stick need to be there or can i take a level reading if it sits right next to the main cap? Does anyone have a pic for reference?

Re: 4 bolt main conversion dipstick install

It takes some massaging to get it to slide past everything.
I had to grind a flat on the outer washer of the 4 bolt cap, grind a groove on the side of the cap and then slowly bend the end of the tube just enough to get it to slide past. It still rubbed on it quite a bit, but that doesn't really matter once it's installed.

To bend the tube, I started out by inserting about and 1" or 2" into the dipstick boss (facing the way it would normally sit) in the block and then pull the dipstick gently out to make a small bend. Then push the dipstick in a little more and again pull out away from the block to add some more bend.
Go slow, take your time and always make small bends, repeat until it will go past the hardware.

If you kink it you're done & it's time to get another.

All i did was cut an inch or so off the bottom of the stock tube and slide the dipstick down.....
works to this day....
