1986 Pontiac aerocoupe project

Has too much rust on floors and fender lips and doors for my skills. Runs good and shifts firm but needs total restoration. It comes with a donor car that is good daily driver condition. It had engine and transmission rebuilt recently. I just need to free up some cash to work on my house. Both have clear Tx titles under my name. Asking $3900 for both cars in operable condition. Can separate... 86 2+2 $2900 & 84 GP $2000.

:rotf: I have seen a couple of them over the years (as well the similar Monte Carlo Aerocoupe) I think they are ugly, but they were were made for NASCAR (aerodynamics). Some people love them and tehy seem to be atleast from the asking prices quite a premium from the regular G-Body (not including the Turbo Regals)

High price because they are super rare (1118 produced)

Its pretty rare. They only built the Pontiac in 1986 and like Jimmy said, only 1,118 were produced. I hope you never have to replace the back glass. The Pontiac and Chevy aerocoupe's rear glass pieces were not interchangeable.

There's a shop in NY that is doing an LSx swap, big brakes, BCM and full instrument panel, complete interior, suspension. I'll get the link later.

Who painted it red? Any rust on the Grand Prix?

Bought as is, sight-unseen. Came from MA and it has too much rust for me to tackle the restoration. Rust is present on floorboards, fender lips and doors. The frame is also flaking off. I bought the 84 GP to cut it up to fix the 862+2 but it had engine/transmission rebuilt and runs and looks good. I searched for around 5yrs for a nice solid straight donor car. They aren't getting cheaper and easier to find. At least not where I live cause if somene didn't turn one into a lowrider, they cut it up for circle track.

I ask because this isn't the first red one i've seen. I'm wondering if some were painted red from the factory.

Example.. I know it says just painted. http://clarksville.craigslist.org/cto/1926925275.html

Heres a nice write up from Hemmings.....

http://www.hemmings.com/mus/stories/2007/03/01/hmn_feature8.html

I found this to be interesting.....

Hemming's Motor News said:
The back window was developed in the wind tunnel on the race car before it was applied to the street car. (The Monte Carlo SS, on the other hand, had its window designed on a street car and was made to fit the racer.)

Hemming's Motor News said:
All 1,225 (a number procured from our friends at Pontiac Historic Services) 2+2s were silver, with charcoal rockers and a red stripe separating the colors, though a couple of cars built for executives are reported to have been painted maroon.

There was a red one that is an Autozone commercial. I dont think any of them were painted red from the factory tho there is 1 known black one http://www.thepontiactransampage.com/aerogp.html. The aero nose could have been ordered without the rear glass on any grand prix in 86 or 87. The actual production number has been argued for years but there has to be fewer than half in decent shape left out there. I ve owned my 2+2 since 2004. 44k miles with the original gutless 305, good on gas and fun to drive on the curvy roads. Im always getting asked what it is or I am told its a nice looking Monte Carlo. Good luck with the sale.

Oh wow guys,
thanks for posting that info on the car. I didn't know most of that except how the car was designed with Richard Petty's help. If there were some red ones, it means it would be even more rare. I though the Autozone commercial used a Monte SS Aerocoupe. It had cowl hood and was red but I thought I saw the straight edged rear window on it. Maybe no. Two more pics to show you guys...

Man those things are ugly. I've never liked them, but my father in law loves them (old Buick fan). He is always talking about building a Monte Carlo SS Aero.

lol I get a lot of that. I feel the same way for the late 60's Barracuda but mid '60 Stingray is a different story. Go figure. In any case, I like it just fine and it handles tight and it's a GBody. Good enough for me.

That red one in Tennessee was some GM big dagw's car! Owner says it was red from the factory. My car's paint code specifies U8535, L8535 which is solid silver. Unless it was a typo.
