Would you buy this Ty?

Okay, so I found a decent Ty for sale, but it's got a few issues that concern me. What do you think of this Ty? All work was done by a speed shop. A few Jiffy Lube oil changes... Yikes! ;)

1. A high flow fuel pump - in the engine compartment - which is very noisy. Why not just replace the in-tank pump?

2. High beams do not work, apparently the turn signal stalk was replaced with some other GMC stalk?

3. Runs at 10psi boost, idles kind of rough, but runs fine otherwise

4. Minor interior cosmetic issues (damaged carpet, shift boot burned, rear seat ripped at top)

5. 106k miles, 25k on rebuild of the original engine with roller cams and unknown internals. Exhaust gasket leak is very apparent, using (custom?) stainless headers, they are one-piece flange that mount to the head (as opposed to each cylinder having it's own flange to prevent warping/breakage.) He said the stock headers cracked (The cast headers cracked? That's unusual, right?)

6. Drives smooth, brakes straight, everything else works.

7. Chipped with ATR

8. Upgraded I/C and I/C heat exchanger

9. Bell RRFPR

10. Manual boost controller

11. Stock rims, decent tires, new paint, body is straight, a little surface rust on the door hinges and that area.

12. No obvious damage from a wreck, clean CarFax report.

13. 3" custom exhaust, smogged

14. Was parked for 1-2 years and not used. Any problems with that?

15. Tranny rebuilt at about 80k miles.

16. Regular maintenance, Mobil 1, new brakes, usual tune-up stuff, etc.

Everything else is stock. The guy wants $20k. Is this a good deal? From what I can tell he's asking a bit too much. Several other people have walked on him already...

If you can give me a heads up I'd be really appreciative. The next closest one for me is like 1 10 hour drive, and if this seems decent, I'll probably pick it up this weekend.

Thanks!

That is kind of what I was thinking. I took an average figure from KBB, Nada, CarsDirect, and Edmunds and came up with $11,537.00 for low value, $14,042.00 for mid, and $17,717.00 as the highest figure for a used Ty. Not to mention looking at Autotrader, and most people have an average price at 11k or so.

Any other feedback guys? I am disappointed, as I am definately looking to get into a Ty ASAP.

So...

Know of any nice WHITE Ty's somewhat near Denver, Colorado? I'd prefer as close to stock over heavily modded. I can drive 8 hours to check it out if you know of anyone with one... My price range is up to $20k :) Just post here or PM me.

Thanks!

Hell,$20000 would buy 2 of those.
If you really want a nice Ty,there's a dude on here with a 34k Teal 92 for 17500 or so.It's in PA so fly in,drive it home.
The truck you described is prolly worth 9 or 10 grand, tops.

Teal doesn't do it for me - I'd be very interested if it were white. Anyone else know of a white one?

Oh, and THANKS for giving me the low down on this truck I found, I'm very grateful for the feedback. VERY. :)

Serious about performance
I have to agree, the truck you detailed sounds like the nightmare from hell, Part III "Freddy's Back With a Vengeance".

I would stay far far away from one like that unless you really like tinkering and don't plan on running the truck at 100% level for at least a year. I am single and work 40 hours and it has taken me 1 year to get my truck close to the 100% stock level and I still haven't done it, and my truck was not known to have any problems when I bought it!! One like the one you talked about, might never get tuned right. Or maybe I'm just slow, I don't know what to tell you but I thought I'd throw out my experiences.

If you don't want to be married to tinkering on this truck, I would try to get one close to stock and well maintained. Less chances of things going wrong that way. But you still might end up tinkering with it for a long time, it's just that you stand better chances this way :)

I think you have gotten the point. That is way way over priced from what you have said. Keep looking make phone calls and work with people on this forum to look at things out of town for you. You will be a lot better off if you do. $20,000-$12,000=$8,000 for a plane ticket and a trip home with a nicer truck.

i have done much searching for ty' and that one is not worth a penny over 10,000. 9,500 should be a good price. the rust? does it have cladding intact?

20K DAMN

20K DAMN

Thats crazy. I just picked up a 92 Typhoon, with new paint, NO rust, rebuilt trans, (which a tranny mechanic is perfect) perfect interior, blah blah blah. All it needs is a ball joint, sway bar, and a tune up. The point I'm tryin to make is I only paid $9k for it. 100K miles...I would hold out for the next one!

Yeah, it has all the cladding, but it is very "here-and-there" modified. I mean not the kind of mods I would like to see, and not necessarily well done at that. The guy is not really sure of what is on the truck anyway, which bothers me. I knew more about his truck than he did, and I had never seen a Ty before. Yikes! ;)

I figured that I would be better off with something stock (or close to it)because I really am just looking for a clean daily driver. I've worked on cars plenty and am at the point where reliability and a relatively quiet, smooth drive is desired. Or, if I get something modded, I want something that has been modded by someone who knows what they are doing/did and did a clean job (i.e., no major hack on the wire harness, didn't drill 2.8 million holes to mount stuff, etc.)

I think the plane ticket (and vacation!!!) are my best bet at this point. :)

Truckless. For now.
Like everyone here said, look forward to traveling for your Ty. I'm in Fort Collins going to school. I drove to Tempe, AZ to pick mine up. For what I got after 14 hours of driving, I'd say it was definately worth it! :D
