Would like opinion on my frame for paint...

I was thinking I would POR-15 the back half of my frame while I have the bed off and doing some other things. I de-greased it and power washed it today. I thought it was worse than it actually is. It has some surface rust in spots, but other spots has the rubberish coating on it still. I know the POR-15 works best on rust and it has to be prepped pretty good. I feel like it won't work out good because I have shiny metal in spots and the rubber under coating in other spots. Should I even bother with POR-15 or should I just go with some black paint or some kind of undercarriage coating?

What you could do is get those wire brushes that you can put on a drill and go to town. I use one all the time and it gets all the rust off. Then primer it and paint it when you are done. Just do a section at a time.

I spent ages prepping my frame for POR15. See my Sy build in my sig. It seems to adhere well to the rust but bare metal is a no-no. It just comes off. I'm pretty disappointed with it.

You could also spray some water on the exposed metal to get some surface rust for the POR15 to adhere to but that seems counterintuitive seeing as the point is to prevent rust.

If you can prime it and paint it, that's probably your best bet.

First you need to sand past frame wax and If you prime it with this https://www.por15.com/mobile/SELF-ETCH-PRIMER_p_35.html and after you need por15 blackcote
Its a 4 part process . I had no rust prior to doing por15 and it turned out great

I sanded to bare metal and rinsed it then used the metal prep or whatever it was. Heated the garage etc.
It wasn't a primer.
Just didn't work that well for me.

That's why I'm second guessing my plans for POR-15. I read that it really only works best if you have rust. Since I have bare metal and rust and some undercoating in spots, I feel like it won't work that great. I guess I'll be wire wheeling all the rust and then prime and paint it. Maybe I'll POR-15 the rear axle since that has all surface rust.

I like DaveP's solution. It sounds pretty tested and legit. I was going to say for a driver I would be happy to knock down the surface rust, rattle can primer and paint then call it a day. A decent Kylon job will probably outlast the truck itself and unless it is being built for show no one will ever see it and you will be happy when you are under it (because Lord knows we can't drive these things without paying time-on-the-ground/cardboard/creeper/etc) and it is not rusty.

I had similar results with the bare/clean metal and using their "metal prep". Just did not stick well. :dunno:

Some guys strip down to the metal and then let the part sit out in the rain/humidity for a few weeks and intentionally let is rust -then apply the POR-15. Supposedly had better results. :dunno:

After doing a full extended cab frame using a 4 1/2" wire wheel I learned this:

Metal prep does not work well. :rant:
It will clean up (when wet) with Dupont Prep-Sol. :tup:
Brake fluid will eat through it. :squint:
It will fade in the sun if you do not top coat ASAP. :roll:

I do Custom body work and restoration for a living, and i have never liked POR 15, There are much better alternatives out there

Daves method is good, but i would use an acid etch primer,wash primer or a good sealer like DP90 over the bare metal, then topcoat, undercoat out of the can is fine, but its not meant to be applied direct to metal and it offers no corrosion protection

Ended up wire wheeling it, and using a rattle can. It came out pretty good. I'm sure it will last a while as it stays in the garage 100% of the time and it's only driven in nice weather.

Did a friends truck a few week ago. We scraped, brushed, wire wheeled, pressure washed and spray cleaners. Got all the cracks and crevasse..... Pur15 the frame and axle. Came out good but it was flaking off in spots when we were installing the bed, so I would go with Dave P way. I do like pur15 paint thought..
