Would anyone be interested in some Custom wheels for SYTYs?

I have a set of 24s on my daily driver that were made for me with a very high offset to get the wheels to tuck with my truck being so low. I was thinking last night it someone made a wheel that looked like the stocker but in a 17 and was as wide on the front and rear as you could run and since they would be made you wouldn't need to run adapters in the back. My wheels came from Bonspeed and I have a good contact there and was thing about calling him to ask what it would cost to have a duplicate of the stock wheels, once the center was programmed and cut they could make them 16s all the way to a 24. I will say they will be kind of pricey but it would be one of a kind and a good alternative for us since there aren't any made. Just let me know if there is much interest.

The 88-89 17" Corvette wheel look a lot like the stock wheel, except with line interesecting the rim openings. Some have talked about cutting and removing the center line. Its probably a cheap option than a ciustom rimThe thread has somne pictures on the second page..

Our stock rims have a lot surface area, I am not so sure the will look that great when being enlarged, but everyone has their own taste.

A while back I looked into wider tires for the stock rims as I wanted to keep the stock look and have a wider tire. I found that I could have the rims cut and a section put into the rims to make them wider...but soon found out there are no wide 16" tires. With no wide tires available for a 16" rim that idea got put to rest.

There is a much larger selection of wide tires in a 17" rim. I would be interested in a 17" rim (but not right now in the future..I am trying scratch money together for a new motor).

Is there an interest?...Yes. You have me interested.

The stock rims have a cast aluminum front piece that is welded to an aluminum rim. It would be very benificial if the front piece was from a billet blank as this would add strength also to them. That cast piece is very porous as anyone who has had their rims resurfaced has seen when you take a skim pass off of the metal to freshen up the face.

The cost will be crazy...see what you come up with. I am gonna guess $4000. after the setup costs. Outta my price range right now but I would be interested in the future.

The topic of getting 17" stockers custom made has come up a few times in the past and always ends in a roadblock due to a mix of cost and the way to do it.

I think alot of people are intersted, but the biggest thing is cost factor. Not alot of people have or want to drop 2-4k on rims and tires, else you probably would see alot more people rolling with some HREs or Fiske around here

Im interesed, and would dump my Z06-Rs for a set of 17" stockers....but only if they were exact match. Id have to see a finished set before even considering spending money.

Re: Would anyone be interested in some Custom wheels for SYTYs?

That was my plan. My wheels on my truck are two piece, meaning I gave them the backspacing that I needed and the took the hoop and welded the center in at the desired back spacing. I don't see why it couldn't be done. I doubt that it would be 4k for the wheels my 24s were 1100 a piece and the price of the 17 inch hoops would be alot less. The main expence would be having the design programmed but the 17 inch hoop would cost very little. I will call him tomorrow. Here are some pictures of my truck with a 24x10 in the front and they were able to make it tuck http://s87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/skyhighsami/Truck/. I was interested in having a wheel done that had never been cut into a 24 before and it was only going to be an extra 200 to have the design programmed to be cut into a 24 size center section. The reason that I didn't is I wanted to have the wheels before Scrapping the Coast and there was no way I could have the new wheels programmed, built, and shipped. I myself am only interested in running a 17x9.5 or 10 in the front and a 17x11 or 12 in the rear. Whatever the widest size that can be fit under there. The largest obstical I think will be the design. But the contact I have also owns his own company outside of Bonspeed so he might be able to do it for me. If he can't do it I know that Oasis makes wheels but they didn't seem to eager to make me some wheels when I called them about having some made that will tuck. If we have enough interest and can get an order together we could have them done I bet. Granted they won't be as cheap as a ZR1 but I like to be different.

I think one of the biggest issues I have with stockers is that they are ugly. The fact they are skinny doesnt help. 1990 ZR1 wheels look close enough to stock and are 11in wide in the rear. That sort of ruins any chance I would be interested in any repro syty wheels.

Some people think the stock wheels are ugly but I myself think they fit the vehicle very well. The ZR1 wheels while they don't look bad I don't like the line in the middle of the opening. All the new wheels look good on them but I would like something that 1 fit and wouldn't need adpaters and 2 fit the style of the vehicle

Re: Would anyone be interested in some Custom wheels for SYTYs?

I have been kincking around the idea of cutting a set of "syty style" rims in 17 X 9.5 front and 17 X 11 rear for awhile. I too feel that they contribute to the look of the truck, I just wish they were a little taller and wider.

The biggest factor thus far has been finding a source for the rim blanks. The table on the mill that I operate is large enough that I could cut all four at one time if I wanted to. Of course, I would be doing all the CAD and machining myself so the only cost I would incur would be the material plus my time.

O.Z. has a nice 3 piece set up but, I'm not crazy about having bolts all around the perimeter to hold the outer rim and inner rim together since that would ruin the look. Back in the day, Boyd Coddington was approached about making a set and the quoted price was $2500 PER WHEEL IIRC. It was my understanding that he already has the CAD files to cut them. But designing them would be very easy since you only have to design one "vane" and then copy it...

Re: Would anyone be interested in some Custom wheels for SYTYs?

Getting wheel blanks wouldn't be a problem. Even Dima wheels when I was talking to him said he would make the wheels that I designed for me. I can contact him again he was a super nice guy buy said that a 24x10 wouldn't work and that I needed to run 22s and 24s on my truck and I knew otherwise. What do you think about cutting the pattern in a set of Centerline Smoothies that is what Dima Wheels start out as. They have these http://www.centerlinewheels.com/sub_wheel.php?mw_id=37 but these are the wheels that I am talking about http://www.centerlinewheels.com/wheels_detail.php?mw_id=1&sw_id=358. Just a thought

Re: Would anyone be interested in some Custom wheels for SYTYs?

I looked into and tried to do this for years. I was goint to try to make/have made 18's. As Adam said, I kept running into road blocks. I finally found a shop that would do the program and machining, and we decided to go the two piece route. Then I ran into the road block of finding a place that would sell me the hoops. Everyone thought i was going to try and make 1000's of wheels or something.

All that being said. IMHO two piece is the way to go. Buy the hoops and machine the faces and centers and weld together. Plus material cost and machine time is much less than trying to do a one piece. I'm in for doing a set of 18's. This would be a dream come true if we could put this together.

And FWIW I love the stock wheels, I just think they're too small, diameter and width wise.

I used to have a photoshop of "enlarged" wheels, but I can't find it. I may have to do it again, just for grins. I like the stock wheels, I just need to get mine refinished. A 17" wheel would be awesome.

Sent you a PM with some info on 1 piece wheel blanks. They won't sell to individuals, just companies. But I doubt that would affect you.

Re: Would anyone be interested in some Custom wheels for SYTYs?

I have been really busy this week so I never got a chance to call but I will try this week. Although be buying wheels will have to wait because I found out that the motor in my truck was replaced with a NA motor. So that has to be fixed.
