Worst luck ever.

I just installed my brand new motor in the sy yesterday, everything went perfect about two hours and it was in. mostly together, but saved the tranny bolts till this morning. I got the top bolts started and tightened up the gap, but left them kinda loose. Then jacked up the tranny about half an inch and put the rest of the bolts in and tightened them up then tightened the top bolts. So I think I'm doin pretty well and everything is tight. Then I let the jack down and all of a sudden I heard a noise look and there is a huge crack from the bottom of the bell housing to the top. I said every four letter word that I could think of and then made some up. ::hang:: So I guess I am pullin the tranny. So my question is are all the 700 casings the same? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am gonna go pout some more now. :(

I am not sure if ALL the 700Rs are the same but its definitely not syty specific.
The mutt tranny I have right now is a SyTy core in a std S10 case.

Same deal, someone cracked the case and transferred all the guts into a new body.

I'd think you should be able to find a case faiurly cheap.
Good time to splurge on a rebuild too.

I can check into getting you aother case. Do you know if its a 91,92 or 93?
When you put the next one on, make sure the tranny is fully seated on the two dowl pins and don't jack it up or down to get access to the bolts once 1 or 2 have already been started. It puts the case in a bind. You don't even need to tighten them up all the way for bad stuff to happen. Mike Campbell put up a good pic of how to get to the top one on the pass side. Use wobble extensions. There is enough of a "guide" with the thickness of the case flange to get the bolts started. Let me know if you want it and what year you've got and I'll see if I can get one particular to yours so you'll have the correct low/reverse piston stackup compatibility and such. You might as well rebuild it if it had any miles on it. You've gotta pull it all anyway. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

I'm not an expert, but I believe there are basically two different styles of case. The old ones had a clip to hold the governor cover on and the newer ones are just a friction fitting.

Like others, my case got cracked so the guts were transferred into an S-10 case.

If you look all the way down in the bottom of the case, you will notice on some cases that there is a raised ridge to help align the low/reverse piston. On the 93's I've seen, there's no such ridge so the piston matches the case. That's why they have so many different pistons available for the low/reverse area and the depth of the piston has to match the type of apply plate(which also happens to house the low roller clutch/sprag).

So have we come up with a firm reason why this happened - so that we can all avoid this major PITA in the future ?

I'll mention how I have done it - about 3-4 times. There's far more expert guys on this list than me, so please chime in.

1.) I put the bolts in while it is still on the Trans jack, which gets it close. I tighten them and torque them while it is still on the jack, and it still able to move around.

2.) I make sure that the Trans housing is on both studs before tightening very far. Then I tighten them around the horn fairly evenly and gradually, so that it pulls in slowly and stays lined up fairly straight.

3.) It may help to grease up the studs a little so that it doesn't bind on one of them. Also make sure that the weight of the Trans is on the jack, so the bolts aren't holding any weight while Ur tightening.

4.) Then I jack the whole assembly up to put the crossmember and rear mount on. U may want to do the cooler lines, dipstick tube and TV connections before U raise eveything because they are easier to get at.

5.) Oh, yeah, another major FU that alotta guys have done, and I almost did it the 1st time. MAKE SURE that the Torq Conv has clicked all the way in - about 3 clicks, but ya can't always hear all of them. It should be back from the edge of the Housing about 1/4-1/2". The 1st one I did on my GN, it wasn't and I was trying to push the TC in w the Trans bolts. I caught myself by putting a post on the list and probably saved the tranny pump, which will break when U do this. That particular TC was real hard to get all the way back, whereas my Ty one went bacl fairly easily.

Improvements, anybody ?
