window motor

I am about to replace my dirvers side window motor.

Can anyone give me some tips on replacing the motor. Is it easier to remove the actuator arms a the entire assembly or just remove the motor?

Also what size screws do I need to replace the rivets? I have been looking an Im guessing an M5 bolt aprox 1 inch long with thread locking nuts.

Thank You:D

Re: window motor

Craig, have you verified the motors haven't been replaced before? I'm working on Treymen's Syclone, and both of his motors have been replaced in the past and were just bolted in using supplied hardware.

Re: window motor

I need to do my passenger side as well. Along with info in how to replace, any info on where to buy and which one to use, OE vs. Aftermarket would be appreciated. You guys that have used aftermarket, what brand did you buy and how is the reliability? Thanks

Re: window motor

I use Autozone for the motors. They are lifetime warranty and come with all the hardware needed to reinstall them. Cost is right around $30 per motor.

Re: window motor

I suggest you remove the window entirely - take out the window felts so you can do this.

The weight of the window is on the motor arm so you also need to take the window off the arm to do this. Having the glass in there may not even be possible.

The motors are rivetted in to the panel in the door with 4 rivets. You need to drill the rivets out. The window arm needs to be in the up position to get access to the motor.

Once drilled, needs 4 bolts with loctite/rivets to secure the motor again. There's a mounting panel that it goes on I think (doing this from memory).

If I recall, it was easier to remove the whole assembly after the window was out and deal with the actuator off the truck.

Re: window motor

No need to remove the window. Just use masking tape to hold it up and then drill out the rivets. I also used an Autozone motor. It took me about an hour start to finish. Just be carefull removing the door panel as to not break the push in fasteners. If you do break some you can get them pretty much anywhere. Good luck.

BTW How hard is it to pull the window out? My passenger window was replaced with the wrong brand and irritates me.

Re: window motor

To get the window out, you need to take the window felts off both the inside and the outside. Inside is attached to the door panel I think.

Once off, lift the window so it is halfway up and you can access the arm. It's held on the arm by a plastic fitting and a single bolt (mpossibly 2) which may have loctite on it.

Undo the bolt(s) and the window will rest on the arm.

Once the window is loose, lower the whole assembly. Once the window is right at the bottom of the door, you can lift it, tip it forwards and angle it out gently. If you have the panels off already, it's a really easy job.

Make sure you check the plastic runner guides on the window glass with the replacement as there are different ones out there and they can come out of the channels if they are wrong.

BTW - I'm not sure about the masking tape idea - it may work but I had a window explode when I was working on it (previous installer had put the plastic support arm the wrong way round and it was loose so I tightened it and BOOM) and I would recommend getting all the fragile material out the way so you can work easily.

The plastic tabs for securing the panels aren't the biggest problem as they are replaceable. The actual door panel can crack if you force the panel off to hard so be wary of that.

Re: window motor

no need to remove window. I have done this twice. Tape window in full up position , drill out rivets, remove unit, bfore you do anything else, clamp the big gear to the backing plate before you takeout the old motor, that way nothing moves, replace motor
