Window Motor replacement

I just have a quick question that me and my dad were arguing about tonight...

Should I replace just one motor since the drivers side window rolls fine,

Or replace both at the same time?

thanx

Re: Window Motor replacement

You could do both if you want the practice, but I wouldn't replace both. More often than not it seems that the passenger side goes out before the drivers side does and it gets used less... There's a how to write up here if you have never done one before. Watch out for the sheet metal inside the door, it is SHARP.

Re: Window Motor replacement

After going to the tyclone walkthru i've run into a couple problems....

For the life of me I can only find 3 rivets when the guide says 4 and on top of that... I also tried drilling my 3 with a 1/8 bit and it just keeps spinning on both sides...

The guide says use a 1/4 drill to drill out the rivets but the replacement bolts/nuts look too small to use in a 1/4 hole... ( I already used the 1/4 drill to drill the door/window motor bracket rivets out but these are another set of rivets that the guide refers to...)
What kinda grease do u guys use to lube the window bracket?

Never done any window work before sorry for the retarded questions :p

Re: Window Motor replacement

It is possible that the motor was replaced before therefore, your motor isn't the same one that you are seeing in the write up.

The old "spinning rivet" is a problem that you can encounter when attempting to drill them out. Just grind the heads off with a cut off wheel in a Dremel or a die grinder and call it a day.

Regarding the hardware, you can use the larger hardware provided that it will CLEAR everything when the motor is in operation. Most folks don't mess with screws and nuts due to the space constraints inside the door. Once you try to get the new motor and regulator inside the door, it will make sense... I have a lot of patience and don't care to grind off another set of rivets when I have to replace the motor *again*. So no pop riveting the new motor in for me.

As far a grease goes, you want to use white lithium.

Re: Window Motor replacement

This is not a stupid question at all. I just did my pass side........searched the crap out of the issue but didn't find all that much info.

Before I forget.....WATCH OUT WHEN YOU FINALLY GO TO PULL THE OLD MOTOR OFF OF THE ASSYEMBLY!!!!! I'm sure you keep hearing about scissor type regulator. I never figured out why people kept calling it that until I pulled the motor up, off the regulator. Thank god my fingers weren't anywhere near it. I was always handling the thing cautiously cause I could never figure out where the surprise was. The surprise is, that regulator is under some serious spring pressure. When you pull the motor, it is released and the one bar snaps towards the other. Have something like a finger in there when it lets go and you will have a problem. I put the longer bar in a bench vice and held the smaller when I was putting the motor back together.

I also grinded that one spinning rivet out. Actually I think I grinded them all out. Die grinder with a cut off wheel made quick work of that. Same way I attacked the large rivets that held the whole thing in.

I used the nuts/bolts to put the motor back onto the regulator. Then new, large rivets to secure everything back to the door.

I wouldn't do the driver's side unless it went out. But that's just me.

Re: Window Motor replacement

did you take the door glass out before you took out the regulator?....sometimes if the glass is still in it, it will be kind of "spring loaded" like you explained.

Not at all. There was nothing springy about the glass. I had the window all the way up and used some styrafoam stuff to wedge the glass against the door body. That was all it took to keep it in place. I put a 2X4 in the door, under the glass in case the window decided to slip and come crashing down.

After the big rivets were out, the whole assy just came right out without any problem at all. It wasn't until I pulled the old motor off the regulator that things got interesting.
