Does anyone know if it will work or be worth the trouble of swapping?
I have access to a free one that needs an intake gasket .

The biggest is the oil pan, the newer stuff has a cast aluminum pan that is designed to mate to the tranny. It "may" fit never tried though. You can't just swap on the syty pan as the bolt pattern is different.
Other than the obvious compression ratio and camshaft differences also.
Another thing worth mentioning is the lightweight crankshafts GM came out with in the late 90's, around 98ish I belive.
They drilled the rod pins out to loose some weight on the cranks in the later years. Apparently they had some problems with cracking though. Back in 99 or so GM released a campaign to remove the oil pan and inspect for cracks in the crankshafts. For that reason alone I'd stay away from the drilled ones in a syty application.
Ramble mod off.
