Wierd Starter Issue

OK, Went to crank truck over and all it does is click real loud (a solenoid click). lots of voltage, tried a jumper box etc....same thing

so I replaced the starter, even know i kinda knew that wasnt the problem.....

turn key...same thing...click/ click

noticed that there are 2 wires going to starter...a thick (maybe 4guage) and a small one...

On the smaller wire, the jacket around the wire was heated up and missing on some of the cable, a little soaked with a pre-existing oil line leak as well..., i loomed it as to make sure it wasnt grounding against anything, and tried to start....same issue.

My questions:

A= if the smaller wire were the problem.....where exactly does that smaller wire go to?

B= before i take a match to this nice truck, does anyone have any further suggestions?

thanks!!!

Re: Wierd Starter Issue

jump the starter selenoid at the starter (small 2" loop w/ #10 ga. wire) and then run a 2 gauge wire from the battery to a remote selenoid, and then from the remote selenoid to the starter.. Your purple wire which originally went all the way down to the starter will activate the remote selenoid.

this will fix all your starting issues.

Re: Wierd Starter Issue

replace all the wires going to the starter. small one goes to ignition (purple, can be found in bundle near wiper motor) other goes to battery. i tapped back into purple neaer the wiper motor. both of mine were pretty much useless at the starter, replaced em and the starter, no more issues. make sure to run them away from heat when you do replace them.

Re: Wierd Starter Issue

Sound like purple wire syndrom.

I personally would replace that length of the purple wire with new wire. Well, I did. I also ran all of the starter wires through some of that heat sheilding stuff to keep the exhaust manifold heat off of them.

Re: Wierd Starter Issue

didnt realize there was a purple wire syndrome...classic case of "shoulda searched first" !!!

thanks guys!!!

...and warmpancakes......I refuse to run my self over......although I had a '68 GTX and was outside the drivers door, reached in, turned the key with it in drive, and it went into the back of the garage!!!!.....what a mess that was.

Sounds like a bad connection at the battery +. The little wire is OK, but the big wire is not.

To be sure it's "purple wire syndrome", try shorting the big wire stud to the small wire stud AT the STARTER. If it cranks, you have purple wire syndrome. There are lots of threads that deal with this.

If it does NOT crank when jumped at the solenoid, You have a big-wire problem. Bad connection on the cable between the batt + and the big terminal.
True. If the solenoid is clicking then I guess the purple wire is doing something. I zeroed in on the description of the purple wire. Could be a bad battery cable, connection, or even a starter too.

How about, make sure you address that small wire while you are in there.

Click Click!

The purple wire does this and mostly when hot it will effect it too.

Best thing to do is cut the purple wire, go to local auto parts store pick up a 30 amp relay(for like fog lights) Run the Purple from the ign switch to the trigger teriminal, the purple going to the starter on the source out terminal, add a good ground and then 12 volt source off junction block on firewall. This will give your starter 30 amps of 12 volt power and you will never have an issue again.

My buddy is an Car Audio Wiz and did this to my truck and have never had problem in 7 years.

Re: Wierd Starter Issue

Good post, I'm going to install a relay in mine. Tired of walking out of stores to a heat soaked starter waiting for it to cool.
