Re: which oil is best ...

I rate them as follows:
Tied for first - Redline, Royal Purple, Amsoil, Castrol Pure Synthetic

Second - Mobil One

Third - Castrol GTX

New engine break in - Castrol straight 30w or 10w30

Dave is correct in his above post about the Mobil One being reformulated, it ain't as good as it used to be. If you look at the engineering reports for vis. break down, load sheer, coke temp and the important two, pressure sheer & lubricisity etc. etc. , you will see any of the brands listed as "tied for first" are some what better than the "new" Mobil, a good bit better than Castrol GTX and TONS better than any thing else. All of the above listed are good oils, race proven and will do a great job if you do the following following in order of importance.
1. Oil temps don't exceed 230.
2. Fuel wash is kept to minium (really rich mixtures or repeated cranking of a non firing engine).
3. Proper weight for temp. & load
4. Filter changes at 2,500 - 3,000 miles for mineral based oils or blends & 4,000 - 6,000 (with good filters!) for synthetic's and some claim up to 8,000?

I know some just can't buy going 6K on an oil change but the endurance and lab tests prove it. I still change mine at 4,000 - 4,500  . Avoid short 10 minute or less drives, a turbo timer is a good idea & certianly if you have to do the "short hop" thing.

I use Mobile 1 15-50 in the sy do to the mileage. I change it every 3,000 miles with a PF-52 filter. In the motorhome I use Castrol Pure Synthetic, change every 3,000 miles. It has 106,000 miles on it and burns 1 quart every 3,000 miles. in the 2001 Van I use Castrol Pure Synthetic, change every 3,000 miles and everything else gets Mobile 1 10-30 .

mobil 1 in the heep and thinking of using royal purple in the ty once the top end is rebuilt

TYRODD

My ass. Look at it.
Re: which oil is best ...

Mobil 1 10w30, NAPA gold filters.

I change my oil every 2000 miles. Using any oil more expensive than mobil 1 (Amsoil, Royal Purple etc.) is just not practical for me, although they are GREAT lubricants :)

Re: which oil is best ...

i ran mobile 1 in the ty when it was running. break-in oil is 10w30. will run royal purple or redline with delco filter. bmw motorsport run castrol pure synthetic and people run those pretty hard.

Re: which oil is best ...

Ordinary Mobil 10W-30. It's usually cheap enough, and I haven't had any problems as of yet. Doesn't seem to burn as much oil as it used to for whatever reason.

Re: which oil is best ...

VP RS1550 is what I’ve run up to this point. When #837 goes back on the road, I’ll either use that again or possibly Amsoil 3000 HDD.

Fully ester-synthetic oil has the best properties. Unfortunately, it is the most expensive. Expect to pay $10/quart for it. VP “RS” series race oil is the only oil I’ve found that plainly states its 100% ester synthetic. Amsoil skirts the issue, but if you read between the lines, I believe their “premium” series is close to a full ester synthetic. From what I can discern, Royal Purple is an ester/PAO blend.

Next down the line are the pure PAO Synthetics (synthesized mineral oils) like Mobil one (or what Mobil 1 used to be). $7 to $8/quart.

One step down are the PAO Synthetic/mineral oil blends (usually marketed as “semi-synthetic”). $5/quart.

Last up are the pure mineral oils; Castrol, Valvoline, etc. $2 to $3/quart.

How good of oil is “required” is largely a matter of how long you run it and how you treat your truck. With regular changes and a pre-luber or turbo timer, you could probably get away with a premium mineral oil.

Re: which oil is best ...

Synthetic oils (Mobile 1 5W30, Purple, Amsol, Castrol are all good, very low to no coking, won't break down like conventional) good for the turbo. Took apart my 454 before I put in tha 502, 100K, no ridge what-so-ever.

Re: which oil is best ...

My mechanic put Castrol Magnatec 10-40 in my truck, but the problem is that this oil is blended, not pure synthetic.

Can someone tell me if it's dangerous if I drive 2k miles with this oil??

Temperatures will reach 100 degrees next month here.

TIA,
Pedro

Re: which oil is best ...

Its your call, But I don't think I would run it. These things are on the high end in the maintenance side already, why take a chance with unknown oil. Is it worth a Engine?

Re: which oil is best ...

I'm on Mobil One also, and ran my Talon dry when a seal blew out on the highway. The pressure was zero so I just shut it down from 3500rpm. That was 60k miles ago!

Once upon a time I heard Castrol GTX had a lot of detergents in it so I avoided running it. As well, I did an oil study many moons ago (when I was apprenticing for a heavy equip tech) and the general consensus was changing synthetics more often that 2000mi was pointless. I didn't think it would hurt but they claimed the oils had a breakin period as well.

Any truth to that?
